Good to Know: 3 Ways Chemicals Enter The Body

Do you ever wonder what all the hoopla is about when it comes to the safer beauty movement? Like maybe you exercise and you drink green smoothies and try to eat healthy-ish mostly 😉  and you’re just wondering why/if the kind of lipstick you’re wearing actually matters?

I get it.  I felt that way for years. I was super leery of all this clean beauty buzz.  I’ve been a lipstick hoarder since my teens, and I was a hardcore card-carrying Sephora chick all through college.  So it took a good long while for me to come into the light.  😉

What shocked me clean was learning…..

  • The FDA has a total of 6, yes, just six full-time inspectors regulating 3 million shipments of cosmetics coming in every year!
  • Since WW11 and the Chemical Revolution, more than 80,000 chemicals have been introduced to the market.  Many don’t have any safety data, and this is particularly true of those used in the skin care and beauty industry!
  • The United States has not passed a major federal law to regulate the safety of ingredients used in personal care products since 1938.
  • Over the past two decades, the European Union has banned close to 1,400 chemicals in the product formulas of personal care products and restricted the levels of over 250 more in such products. The United States has only partially banned 30 to date.

Chemicals enter the body in three ways:

  1. Ingestion
  2. Inhalation
  3. Absorption

Most people focus on ingestion, i.e. eating healthy, however chemicals that enter the body via inhalation or absorption hit the bloodstream before reaching the liver.  The human body actually has more protective mechanisms in place for chemicals that are ingested verses those that are inhaled or absorbed.

Many like to think of the skin as a barrier/protector, but it actually operates much more like a sponge.  So basically, from a purely chemical standpoint, what you rub or spray ON your body is just as, maybe even possibly more important than what you put IN your body.

So in a nutshell, this is why safer beauty matters!

Download the EWG Healthy Living App & Switch to Safer Color Cosmetics

Best place to start your beauty detox:

  1. Download the Environmental Working Group’s Healthy Living App.  With ratings for more than 120,000 food and personal care products it’s a great way to check the safety of the products currently in your beauty bag.
  2. Switch to safer color cosmetics!  This is the best, most fun and easiest place to start your switch to safer beauty!  Colorants used in conventional cosmetics in products such as foundation, blush, powder, eye shadow and lipstick are often high in heavy metals.  Heavy metals such as lead, mercury, aluminum, cadmium and arsenic are naturally occurring substances, but are not safe for humans at any level.  Look for safer cosmetics brands that are transparent with their ingredient selection process and batch test for heavy metals.

BATCH TESTING FOR HEAVY METALS

Why is this so important?   Because it’s not enough to test an ingredient once and then say the end product will be safe.  Supply chains can change, and where ingredients are sourced from in the world can change with time.  In addition, the manufacturing process can also lead to cross contamination or the unknown addition of dangerous by-products.  This is why batch testing the end product is so important.

Very few companies are that rigorous in their testing, which is one of the main reasons I fell in love with Beautycounter’s makeup, especially their foundations, lipsticks and other powders like blush and eye shadow.

And this is the reason I wanted to share all of this with you today!  Because so many of Beautycounter’s color cosmetics are on sale right now!

  • This highlighter palette that I’ve raved about more than once on Instagram is now 40% off ($29.40)!!!  This palette is perfect for a glammed up New Year’s Eve look, but it’s also so, so great for those days when you don’t want to put a ton of effort into your makeup. I’ve been using these powders as eyeshadows and loving them!

  • And if you were hoping to get this Mini Lipstick Vault in your stocking this year but didn’t, it’s not too late to gift yourself!  And now it’s 35% off ($51.35)!  The Color Intense Lipsticks are long-lasting but feel amazingly moisturizing on your lips!  And this is great variety of shades to choose from.  Save a few to gift to a girlfriend for an upcoming birthday, or keep them all for yourself.  No shame in your game.  😉
