What I Look For in a Planner

Happy New Year friends!  Can you even believe it?  It’s 2019!  I think I’m still in shock at how fast 2018 flew by, so I’m just over here easing into this new year at somewhat of a snail’s pace.  Although I am happy to report all of my Christmas decor is now mostly put away save for the naked tree on my screen porch I plan to leave up for another month.  Anyhow, for me a new year brings a new planner.  Am I the only human left on earth that hasn’t completely gone digital?  I use the Cozi app to manage family scheduling, but I absolutely can not function without having a hard copy calendar and weekly agenda.

There is just something about putting pen to paper that helps me to get my brain sorted.  It’s almost therapeutic in a way, and it definitely helps me to stay organized.  I’ve been using a planner since middle school, so maybe it’s a bit of a security blanket for me.  Regardless, I’m fairly particular about my planners.  Like Goldilocks I have to have the exact, perfect-for-me planner every year.  And in recent years I’ve become a huge fan of the Day Designer line at Target.

I just brought this one home and have already put it to use.  I love the freshness of a new planner!  Don’t hate me for being so nerdy.  😉

Day Designer Planner

The Day Designer meets all of my personal requirements:

  • lays completely flat
  • monthly and weekly calendar pages with ample writing space
  • large 8.5″ x 11″ size – (small planners just don’t work for me)
  • and last but not least, TABS!  I must have tabs!

And the best part is it’s only $14.99!  No matter how great the planner I just can’t bring myself to spend a lot of money on one.

Although I have considered splurging on a personalized Erin Condren planner , but I’m not sure I’d like the smaller size.  So I’ve never ordered one.

Are you a planner person or do you organize your calendar and daily schedule completely via your phone now?  I think it’s interesting to discuss these seemingly random details.  Judging by the picked over selections in my Target store I have a feeling I’m not alone in my planner obsession.  So tell me, do you have a favorite type?  What are your must-haves when selecting a planner?

  • I am on my third Erin condrin planner and I will say I use the weekly horizontal version. There is ample space for planning! They have bigger ones now I believe!

  • I love Emily Ley’s Simplified Daily Planner (her signature line, not the one currently in Target and a few more places). It’s design is simple yet effective because you can tailor the writing space to your own needs. I want to try her Dapper Desk line next time though because it lays flat and that is the one thing that bugs me about my current spiral bound one. Love reading people use, guess I’m a nerd too! 🙂

  • I’m a Moleskine girl through and through. They have a planner that fits in my purse and has the days of the week on the left page and then a lined page on the right for lists, etc. It’s perfection.

  • With the spiral planners do you not find it hard to right when your wrist lays on top of the spirals? I’ve had to do hard back planners for that reason.

  • I think because I use the larger sized planners it’s not an issue for me. I’ve never noticed an issue with the spiral binding. I wouldn’t be against the hard back, but I have to have one that lays completely flat.
