Fall Front Porch

It was pretty much 90 degrees all week in Charleston, but Trader Joe’s got all of their pumpkin goodies in this week so you know what that means.  Bring on the fall vibes because it’s officially fall in my book!

Welcome to my Fall Front Porch

I buy mums every year.  And every year….they end up dead before Halloween.  Here’s hoping this year is the year they live to see Thanksgiving!  If you have any tips I’d really appreciate them.

The mini pumpkins in the flower baskets make me happy.   I just love mini pumpkins!

The black and white striped ribbon I’m using to hang the wreaths is hard to see in these pictures, but I love how it looks in person.

Are you ready for pumpkin season too?

  • Water your mums every day (perhaps twice a day – it looks like they are in small pots). Fertilize once a week.

  • So here is my experience with mums….if you put them out this early, they will die by Halloween/Thanksgiving unless they are well watered or planted in the ground. They only bloom once so if you have mums that have bloomed in September, those flowers will die and not come back unless you plant that baby in the ground while its still vibrant and green. It will come back next year, but you have to keep the stems cut back to about 6 inches until its closer to when you want them to bloom. Then stop cutting about 2 weeks ahead, keep them watered, and they should bloom beautifully. After this, you can let them grow bigger and bigger each year. My grandmother had a couple on each side of her front steps and they were huge. Cutting back seems to just control when they bloom, now how big your base will grow each year.
