Light bulbs are really cool these days. Have y’all noticed?! I was talking with a friend who is considering making a few updates in her kitchen, and I told her before she spends money on new pendants for her island, she should try some new lightbulbs. She totally thought I was kidding. But I was serious. “No really, maybe all you need is a cool light bulb!”

I mean, heeello gorgeous, gold dipped bulb of light!
This beauty could definitely give a boring old lantern a little bling. And for a fraction of what you’d pay for a brand new light fixture.
And if gold isn’t your jam, they also come in chrome.

And then there’s these really fun oversized vintage-style bulbs that can really help to give a small fixture a little more presence.

All I’m saying is it’s worth a shot. If you want to update a light fixture or are just in the mood for a subtle change, a cool new light bulb could be just the ticket.
I tested a few options in the powder bathroom at the new house. (Which by the way, we move in to our seventh house on Friday!!!!! I’m totally Jessie Spano level excited over here right now. 😉 )
This small powder room doesn’t have a window and is right off of a small hallway that also doesn’t receive much natural light. So I chose to bring in two light sources in this space, a sconce over the mirror and a ceiling flush mount.
This little guy is only $55.65 and comes in three other colors! But I loved this black and chrome option so much.

First I tried the oversized vintage bulb.

This picture gives you a better idea of the scale. This light bulb is HUGE! And I think it looks okay, but I wasn’t loving this.

And I definitely wasn’t digging how the bulb temperatures were competing in here. This vintage style bulb has a much warmer glow than the warm white LED bulbs in the sconce. These are the kinds of small details that irk me. SO……

……next I tried the gold dipped bulb because I’ve always loved mixed metals. And because I am bringing in a brass framed mirror and brass hardware into this powder room. But I definitely did not dig this look either. It felt disjointed, and not in a cool I’m going against the grain kind of way.

But then in a total Goldilocks moment, the third option was juuuuust right! The chrome dipped bulb is so fun!

These pictures hardly do this justice, but I promise it looks really cool in real life. 😉 Overhead exposed bulbs can often cast such harsh light, so I love that the chrome dip throws the light back up on to the ceiling.
So this fixture doesn’t blind you when you walk in to this bathroom. Plus, little design details like this are always my favorite!

Obviously I could have used any light bulb in here, but a decorative bulb is so fun in a space like this. And I definitely think experimenting with a cool light bulb is a worthwhile endeavor before replacing a light fixture. What do you think? Planning a trip to the lightbulb aisle at the hardware store sometime soon? 😉
