What Space Should I Finish First?

Hi friends! Thank you so much for weighing in with your thoughts and opinions about the backsplash tile in the pantry! You all are the very best sounding board a design-obsessed girl could ask for! Today I’ve got another question for you, but before we jump into that, I want to take a minute……

We’re moving in to our seventh house in 9 days! (I’m actually writing this blog post from my office at the new house because the wifi has been connected over there!) After 18 months of dreaming and planning, I can hardly believe how close we are to the building finish line! But it’s more than that. I’ve been feeling all the emotions lately. As someone who has never in her adult life lived in a state longer than 5 years, it feels so good to be in a place where I feel comfortable calling it home. Charleston, South Carolina, feels like home.

Home. Gosh, that’s such a lovely word.

This move, building this house, it’s about so much more than a structure. It represents making a decision to really settle down. And after 19 years of being “on the move” this shift feels really significant.

I’ve been in a packing frenzy, so I don’t think it’s really sunk in completely yet. But I’ve been trying to really soak this time in and be fully present, rather than letting the chaos and exhaustion overwhelm me.

Anyway, I want to say thank you to all of you who have come along on this journey! Your thoughts, insights, encouragement and excitement has made the building process so much fun!

Of course my mind is spinning with decorating ideas, and I can’t wait to get in and unpack and get going! I’ve decided I want to start small. I want to unpack and live in the house for a little while before taking on any major decorating projects. And here’s where I need your help!

Which small space should I tackle first?

The Powder Room?

I’ve already created a working design plan for this little bathroom, and it calls for bold, patterned wallpaper! Insert praise hands! I’ve been wanting to play with a fun pattern for a while now, and this tiny powder room feels like the perfect space!

But then I wonder if I should wait a bit longer and live in the house a little while before committing to a pattern. Which makes me wonder if I should maybe take on…..

…The Laundry Room…

…as my first official decorating project in the new house?

The harlequin floors are such a great jumping off point!

And there’s really not much else that needs to happen in here. I will most likely leave the walls white, so that the white washer and dryer will “disappear” into the walls creating the illusion of more space.

But since I opted to skip cabinets in here, I will need to add some kind of shelving/ storage for laundry soap and things. And I want this little space to feel kind of chic……can laundry rooms even be chic? I think YES, right?! With the right vintage accessories…….it could definitely lean chic.

I feel like the laundry room might be the perfect room to start with because I could really do anything in here without having to think too much about how the decor of this space will flow with the rest of the house.

Laundry rooms are so gangster like that. 😉 They don’t care what the rest of your house looks like. They walk to the design beat of their own drum. 😉

But what would you all want to see first? A Bold, Patterned Powder Room or a Chic Laundry Room? Let me know! Which project sounds more fun and interesting to you?

  • I say laundry room since it’s a space I feel like I spend so much time in. Once that space was done in our new house I felt like I could focus on so much more.

  • Hands down, laundry room! As you know, that is the place you will be the most, besides your kitchen and asleep in your bed! We built new, and emptied the money tree before we got to finishing the laundry room, which I regret wholeheartedly. I know you said you opted no on cabinetry in there, but… I see a white countertop over the washer dryer for folding, and wall to wall cabinets above, that die into the ceiling, a cutie step stool, a black hanging rack (very parisienne) for your non-dryables, and bold, colorful wallpaper between the cabinetry base and the washer dryer.

  • Laundry room, for sure. It has to function and until you have some sort of shelving, all the laundry soap and dryer balls will be sitting on top of your washer. Plus you need somewhere to hang things that don’t go in the dryer. The powder room is functional- maybe not as pretty as you want, but it’s functional. We moved in July, and I’m still working on the laundry. My powder room is done because we tackled that first. I’m still aggravated with myself for choosing design over function!!!

  • Does your husband give his opinion on decorating and if so how do you handle? We
recently moved and all the sudden my husband
has an option, which is more about comfort and not how I would like to decorate the room as. Which leads to many disagreements. Just wonder how you handle this. Thanks.

  • Laundry room! Get your feet wet in there in a less stressful space while you finish up the unpacking and organizing. Excited to see the chic little space! Are those tile floors or vinyl? Super cute!

  • You can always keep guest out of your laundry room but the powder room will most likely get used by your guests so, of course, I say powder room!

  • Yes, my husband has always had an opinion. He has his own style, which is very different from mine. And we used to get into disagreements about decor, furniture, etc. a lot. But we’ve gotten much better at merging our styles and compromising. This is a great topic for a blog post! Thanks so much for asking this! I will definitely plan on writing a dedicated blog post about this very soon!
