House#7 – House Progress, a Video Tour

I shared a little video house tour of the building progress over at our seventh house on Instagram stories over Christmas break, but with Instagram’s algorithm a lot of you may not have seen it.  Plus, I know there are quite a few of you that are not on instagram at all, so I put together a quick video to share here on the blog.  I added in a few illustrations too, so you can get a better picture of what things will look like.

It’s been so much fun to share this design process and all of the building progress with you all!  Your enthusiasm and excitement is so appreciated!  Building this house in our favorite place on Earth is our dream come true, and it’s been so great to bring you all along on yet another house adventure.

We spent years talking and dreaming about one day living in Charleston, and to make that dream a reality almost four years ago was just amazing.  But to have stumbled across this lot and have the opportunity to build a home that will hopefully see us grow old, become empty nesters……welcome grandchildren one day…….is just beyond!  Grateful doesn’t seem fitting.  Humbled for sure.  I’m already picturing prom pics and our 20th wedding anniversary vow renewal in the backyard.  And now, I’m not crying….you’re crying.

Without further adieu……

  • What’s more exciting (and scary!) than building a new house?? It looks like you’re lovin’ the construction part as much as anything – like us – does that make us all weirdos?

Keep posting the progress shots – the more the better!

    220, 221 – whatever it takes!

  • Carmel,
Just curious, how is it practical to have a kitchen on the second floor or are you having a dumb waiter for groceries; or did I misunderstand the layout? And all those stairs? How does that work for growing old and not falling down those stairs when 100 and shaky? Yes, wanting all of us to live strong, healthy, as long as possible so 100 was my default number. 🙂 Also, thank you for advising of the Stinky documentary on Netflix. Eye opening and threw out out my Chanel N5 and all my perfumes. Going to order cotton PJs for my kids and throw out the Disney made in China PJs. I order my make-up from the Honest Co, and am very happy with their products. Also switched to Madison Reed for natural hair color (as natural as it can be ) and love it. Your blog is the only one I follow and keep up with the great reporting! Excited to see what you choose for cabinet colors and counter tops. Feast your eyes on this one of a kind kitchen with black window trim. https://www.houzz.com/photos/north-san-antonio-kitchen-remodel-transitional-kitchen-austin-phvw-vp~118619313
I love the island and having the option of the drop down for future grand kids to sit without tumbling off a high bar stool -genius! And those high bar stools are never comfortable not any that I have seen; if you find any- let us know that could be an entire blog post 🙂 Cheers!

  • Haha, yes, I think the floor plan may be a little tough to follow in this unfinished state. The house is elevated, like a lot of Charleston homes are, because we’re in a flood zone. The kitchen is on the first floor. The garage is underneath the house. The master, laundry, even the guest bedroom is all on the first floor, so I think we’ll be okay for a good long while. But we’ve also made sure to think about the future and made sure to include an elevator shaft from the garage to the second floor. We’ll use that space as storage for now, but if we ever need to add an elevator in the future we’ll be able to do it without too much trouble.

Glad to hear you got rid of all your synthetic fragrances! That documentary is really eye-opening isn’t it?

  • Truly a delight to read your response and thank you! The layout for flooding precautions makes complete sense now and so does the forward thinking with elevator provisions. Heartfelt congrats on the new home to be!
P.S. You have me hooked on documentaries now and just watched The Bleeding Edge via Netflix. Yikes, scary stuff and so many things we need to know to protect ourselves and loved ones. Also, looking to order non toxic and non flame retardant furniture. Check out Stemgoods.com and .ecobalanza.com, or if you have better leads, please share.
    Best!

  • Thanks Christina! Now you have me curious…..I’ll have to check out The Bleeding Edge, haven’t seen that yet. I’ve not been as proactive about furniture, one step at a time you know? But thanks for sharing! I’ll let you all know if/once I start doing more research in that particular area.
