I seriously can’t thank you all enough for your feedback regarding my pink paint color dilemma. It really is so helpful to hear your thoughts! Today I’m turning my attention to the interior of the house and sharing my preliminary plan for the powder room.
Selecting light fixtures for an entire house all at one time is a little daunting. But I’ve found putting together these little design mood boards for each space to make the process less intimidating. Rather than forcing myself to choose every single fixture for every room in the house all at one time, I’ve been checking things off room by room. It’s a little more work this way because I’m forcing myself to make some design decisions that truly don’t need to be made until we actually move in, but doing it this way will hopefully mean I’ll have more of a true design game plan right from the start.
Powder Bathroom Plans
My photoshop skills are definitely lacking, but you get this gist here. 😉 The overall design vibe I’m going for in this house is “new house with an old soul”. And there will be some quirk added in there because, have you met me? 😉
Because I love the idea of a little continuity in a house I’ve decided to use chrome faucets everywhere. And I’m actually using this Delta faucet in all of the bathrooms because I love the traditional lines and cross handles of this style so much!
The other reason I’m going with chrome? It’s easy to match. Chrome is chrome is chrome is chrome, no matter the manufacturer, and no matter if you’re talking faucets or light fixtures. Whereas there are so many different brass and polished nickel finishes from which to choose it can easily become a headache to match finishes. I did consider going with polished nickel because it often plays a little nicer with brass being that it’s a slightly warmer silver tone. However I switched gears and reverted to chrome when I realized just how hard it would be to find matching polished nickel light fixtures. Everyone’s polished nickel is slightly different. And while I do love the look of mixed metals, to pull that look off you have to have some repeating metal finishes in a space. Anyhow, bottom line for me – Chrome is just easier to work with, and the bonus is that it’s such a cost-effective classic! It never goes out of style, and it’s so affordable!
You’ll never guess where I sourced these light fixtures?! I love the modern, industrial lines of this sconce paired with the traditional faucet. And this flush mount plays so well with the sconce. I love the matte black shade. Although the shade comes in three other finishes, and I also really like the navy option. (Considering that for my son’s bathroom.)
To warm things up and add some interest in the powder room I plan to bring in an antique gold mirror (on the hunt for something similar to this one) and polished brass hardware.
Is this not the most gorgeous toilet paper holder you’ve ever seen?!
And this hook is just…..I mean, it’s normal to be in love with a hook right?
A powder room is such a fun space to play with design. There’s just something about designing a powder room that makes me feel free to do anything. Maybe that’s why this is one of the very first spaces in our new house where I put together a design plan. It feels like a space where anything is possible because anything goes! It’s a design playground with a toilet in it. HA!
I’m actually planning to go bold with wallpaper in here too! But I haven’t decided on a pattern yet, although I am loving this! I’ve always loved a powder room with a feminine vibe.
* Side note on the building process ~ We’re working with a custom builder which makes it a little easier to source selections from anywhere we want. But I know that’s not always an option when you’re building a house. When it comes to lighting specifically, I recommend just taking the credit from your builder and sourcing the fixtures on your own. With the wide variety of options available online nowadays you’ll not only come away with selections that better fit your personal design style, but you’ll probably also save a ton of money. Just my two cents here. Light fixtures are everything! And it’s so much better to get exactly what you want than to pay for builder grade fixtures you’re not crazy about or to be forced to choose all your fixtures from one lighting place.
oooh pretty! Based on your wallpaper, I’m thinking your colors for this house are going to be a bit different?
