making it flow & powder room plans

I prefer for the design of all the living spaces in my home to flow seamlessly from room to room, but creating a good house design flow can be a little tricky.  I don’t want monotony, but I do want harmony.   Personally, I find when I’m in the design planning stage that it’s really helpful to start by creating a design board with the adjoining room as a jumping off point.  For example, since I’m currently in the middle of revamping our powder bathroom, I put this little inspiration board together using a photo of the nearby entry foyer as the base for my bathroom design plan.

And the entry foyer design plan was based off of the living room, which was point A.  How did I choose point A?  When we moved in to the house late last summer I decided to start the design of the whole house with the one room we’d probably live in the most, hence the living room became point A.

I mainly use this system for designing the living spaces and allow all of our bedrooms to just be a free for all.  The bedrooms will flow, in that they’ll have a few similarities to the overall house design, but for the most part I feel like the bedrooms are personal retreats so it’s okay for them to have their own unique look and vibe.

Anyhow, as you can see from the above bathroom design board I’m playing with pinks, red, charcoal grey and black and white.  In a window-less powder room there aren’t many options for adding life to the space, so it’s good to have fun with pattern, paint and art.  I’ve been in love with this Rifle Paper Co print for basically ever and am so excited to use it in this little space.  I’m also head over heels for this colorful abstract from a new Etsy favorite of mine, and it pairs so well with this fun flamingo print.

If you’ve been following the behind the scenes progress on snapchat you know I just recently finished the big tile project I had planned for the space, at least the meat of it…..I still need to grout….which is on my agenda for today.  I can’t wait to get the toilet reinstalled and finish up this project!

And in case you missed it, check out the diy schoolhouse style light fixture I created for this bathroom.  I’m hoping to have more progress to share with you all very soon!  For behind scenes sneak peeks check me out on Instagram and Snapchat – @ourfifthhouse.

  • I love that you mix pinks and reds …. that would never occur to me and you pull if off so well. And love seeing how you carry the stripes throughout spaces. It really creates a cohesion. Can’t wait to see the bathroom!

  • Such a great design Carmel! I love the art you are using in here and I hear you on seeking a flow to rooms that is harmonious. I am trying to marry old and new and make it all cohesive and the solution is a lot of neutrals, but I need some things to give our spaces a little punch. Looking forward to checking out your art sources.

  • How are you subscribing? Feedblitz? I’m not sure why you’re not getting my posts? I’ve not known of any other subscribers having any issues.

  • I subscribe using feedly and your blog hasn’t been showing up for a couple months now. I tried removing from my reader and re-adding and it still doesn’t work.

Love today’s post, I’m trying to add more color to our house and need to keep this in mind!

  • I’ve been trying to get Feedly to update since I made the switch to WordPress. It’s a backend issue on their end that is unfortunately out of my hands. I recently even tweeted them to see if I could get them to update. Let me know if it’s still not updating. You can always subscribe via email. I know it’s a pain getting a bunch of stuff in your inbox but if Feedly won’t update that may be the best option. Or what about Bloglovin’. That’s what I use as a reader.
