House #7 Update – Still Deciding Between Pinks

This is the hardest, or more accurately the most scary, decision I have to make at our seventh house.  Selecting an exterior paint color is easier said than done.  And I’ve never had to choose a color for a whole house before.  A door color?  No problem.  There’s not as much to lose if you make a mistake on  door color.  But a whole house?!  I’m kind of freaking out at this point.  B and I decided right from the start that this house would be pink.  Before we even nailed down the plans, we knew.  We’ve both always wanted to live in a pink house in Charleston.  It’s a dream we tucked away in our hearts many years ago.  But now here we are just two days away from having to turn in our house paint color selections, and truth be told, if it weren’t for the fact that both of our neighbors have white houses, I’d totally chicken out and just go with a beautiful, classic shade of white.

(*These pictures were taken on my iPhone.  No editing whatsoever because I want you all to see these colors as accurately to real life as possible.)

But the thing is, apart from the fact that both of our neighbors have white houses, I also know that deep down if I don’t go with pink I’ll always regret it.

But choosing between these two shades of pink is so much harder than I anticipated.

I’ve at least narrowed it down from the four options I originally started with to these two – State Street Pink and Pink Mimosa.   Isn’t it crazy how different they both look from these paint chips?

I should probably back this train up just a bit and explain something because I’ve had quite a few people on Instagram recommend other pink paint colors or ask why I don’t try a different color if I’m having so much trouble choosing between these two.

We live in a neighborhood that has a homeowner’s association and our architectural review board has a pre-approved selection of exterior paint colors.

This is the Historic Colors of Charleston Palette by Duron at Sherwin Williams. You can submit a request to use a paint color that isn’t on this palette of colors, but you kind of have to jump through hoops to do it.  And while I may be undecided on which shade of pink I like best, it’s not because I don’t like these choices.

Both colors are lovely.  And I was initially leaning towards State Street.  But after evaluating these swatches during different times of day and in different lighting scenarios (cloudy days and sunny days) I’ve started to feel like State Street may read a little too cool, and in some light almost looks lavender-ish.

But I can’t decide if maybe it only reads that way because it’s next to Pink Mimosa which is clearly a much warmer shade of pink.

The struggle is real y’all.

My concern with Pink Mimosa is that it feels a little too bright, but I’m also trying to take into consideration that no matter what color I choose there will be some fading over time.  And I’m already going with very pale shades of pink as is, so maybe starting out a little brighter will be a good thing.

I plan to paint some areas of the trim today to get a better idea of how these colors will play with white trim.

In the meantime while I’m still debating I’d love to hear your thoughts!

  • I can no longer see the pictures on your posts. I read quite a few blogs and can se everything they post. Have you made any changes to your site recently? Have any of your other readers encountered this problem? I enjoy your posts, but I want to see the pictures too!

  • Pink Mimosa! I think I asked before but didn’t see an answer – how does paint hold up there in that climate? When we built 20+ years ago, intending/thinking this will be our last home, we wanted as maintenance free as possible. Brick with vinyl on everything that we could. So very little painting (doors, shutters, etc.). Lots of southern sun can do a number on paint (and wood). I’m just curious since it’s hotter and more humid where you are. Is it alot of maintenance?

Sis and her husband wanted brick on their Mt. Pleasant home and ended up buying a 5 bedroom home (and it’s just the two of them!!!) to get it.

  • Like the pink color on the front doors of your current house! Any of those historic colors close to that?

  • I don’t think you can go wrong with either color, they’re both lovely! Having said that, I bet you’ll be surprised at how much brighter and less lavender-y State Street appears when it’s next to the white trim. Pink Mimosa might be too… pink? Definitely paint some swatches next to the white trim and see what you think, I bet that will solve the dilemma!

  • Pink mimosa !! I just bought an oops paint that looks just like the pink mimosa and its so old fashioned and beautiful

  • Both are beautiful but my gut reaction was State Street and liked it more and more throughout the post.

  • State Street looks like it has a purple undertone to me. If so, then I would go with Pink Mimosa at 3/4 intensity. A whole house will look much brighter when it is done, so tone which ever one you choose down a notch. Your house is going to be gorgeous.

  • I agree! I think both colors are being thrown off because they are surrounded by the tan color of the siding. Try them up against white and I bet they will read a lot differently. Good luck!!

  • I would go with Pink Mimosa. If you are worried that the intensity is too strong, ask the paint store to decrease the intensity.

  • Pink Mimosa!! Looks like a crisp and clean pink, which will be so pretty with white trim, and nestled between its two white neighbors. 🙂

  • I like Pink Mimosa. The other is too lavender, IMO. It’s going to look great!

  • Pink Mimosa ALL THE WAY!!! After visitng historic Charleston twice in 2019 already, one trip in full sunshine and the other under cloud cover, I say go for the bright and bold pink …and although repainting the entire house would be disruptive and an added cost, you know that it could be repainted another day if it becomes your heart’s desire.

  • Before I read your comments about the colors, I looked at your photos. My thought was that State Street looked a bit lavender. I’m going with Pink Mimosa. It’s a happy color! I think once you get plants, door paint, etc… there will be no doubt. Good luck! Both colors are great.

  • Pink Mimosa! It’s bright, and if your neighbors have white houses, then I think the brighter shade of pink will fit right in while standing out, know what I mean? It’s a more crisp, true pink in my opinion. As always, go with your gut, it rarely steers you wrong!

  • I will be awaiting your next post to find out the winning color! I agree that the color chips are completely different than the painted samples. The Pink Mimosa is way brighter than the blush color swatch. I think Marty’s idea of reducing the intensity might be the answer. All the best from Waco, Texas where we have no pink houses 🙁

  • I was just curious if you tried a sample of the Pinckney that is one of the accepted color choices? Whatever you pick will be gorgeous!

  • I love the Pink Mimosa too! But like everyone has said no matter which you choose, it is going to be stunning!

  • I think Pink Mamosa, because I would want to avoid any possibility of paint coming off as lavender. It’s going to be beautiful!

  • I love the pink mimosa. It is a true shade of pink the other is very dull in comparison. The final decision is yours, good luck!

  • I like them both but I’m partial to State Street as it’s a little more muted. I don’t think it will look lavender on its own with white trim. When we painted our home we put samples on each outside wall as they look different depending on the sun or shade. We didn’t put the two colors we narrowed down close to each other as well. Either way, in Charleston, you probably can’t go wrong. Best of luck and can’t wait to see what you pick! House looks stunning!

  • Pink Mimosa is my favorite of the two colors. From a distance, State Street Pink looks a little muddy. Like you said, the trim color may be the deciding factor.

  • If a truly PINK pink house is your dream, then it’s got to be State Street. The yellow in Pink Mimosa takes it toward salmon, I think.

  • State Street if a truly pink house is your dream. And to my eye, it’s also the more elegant pink. With a vivid-white trim (or a slightly red-toned white if you want to warm it up) State Street would be stunning, I think! Bright and sparkling, especially in sunny light.

The yellow in Pink Mimosa veers it toward salmon and doesn’t afford the same opportunity for “sparkle”.

  • Hi Leora, You’re the only person to tell me that. The photos load fine for me on all my devices. I’m not sure what could be causing that issue. I’ve not made in changes in quite some time. Wonder if that is a browser issue?

  • Pink Mimosa! It has been my top choice for your house all along. The other pink looks washed out and full.
