Choosing an Exterior Color Palette for House #7

At this stage of the game we don’t have to fully commit to our house colors for house number seven, but being that we’re building in a neighborhood with a homeowner’s association we do have to send in an application for approval with our architectural plans before we can begin the construction phase.  So we had to choose a “tentative color scheme” in order to get the construction process started.

A Rainbow of Colors from Which to Choose

Being that we live in Charleston, South Carolina, when it comes to selecting a house color, we truly have the rainbow from which to choose.  And while that’s very fun and exciting, it’s also a little overwhelming.  I mean, I’ve boldly and rather fearlessly chosen interiors colors (remember my dark navy bedroom walls and bold red living room in our fifth house?) and even front door colors, but a whole house color?!  Yikes, that’s a big commitment!  And a costly one to change if you get it wrong!

The colorful homes of the Charleston area have always drawn me in, so I definitely plan to have some fun in this area!  It seems almost criminal not to right?  For someone like myself who has always been a huge color lover, I see this as the perfect opportunity to play with a color that would be hard to pull off in another area of the country.

Colors of Historic Charleston

I’ve done a ton of exterior house color research and was happy to find that Sherwin Williams has an entire collection named ‘colors of historic charleston’!

And while these colors are wide and varied, it somehow feels a little safer and a little overwhelming to select an exterior shade from this collection.  It’s a more narrow view of the rainbow.  😉

*Fun fact – The green color of our current home, our sixth house, is apart of this collection ~ Salt Marsh.

Front Door Color – Sherwin Williams Rachel Pink

I wasn’t a fan of our green house color until I painted our front door pink, which was one of my very first house projects when we moved here three years ago!

Playing with Pink!

I’m not going to lie, I’m a little nervous about making such a bold house color choice for the exterior.  The neighborhood we’re building in is filled with lots of colorful homes ~ everything from aqua blues to sunny yellows and minty greens, and yes, there is even one home already dressed in pink.  And it’s that house that always makes me smile ear to ear when I drive by it, so I’m just going for it!  I’ve yet to nail down the exact shade of pink, but I’ve got plenty of time to make that decision.

If you had the rainbow to choose from, what house color would your heart desire?!

  • I LOVE IT!!! That is what is always so fun about driving around in the South looking at houses. The colors are so fun! Unlike up here in IN where you are stuck with tan and gray. Unless you are us a build a cute red house in the middle of a tan subdivision. ??

  • I am so excited you chose pink! There is something about a pink house that is so special. There is a pink house down on the beach in our area and I always drive by it just to look at it every time we are there.

  • I always loved the pink houses when we lived in Charleston. There were actually three in a row in our neighborhood! That was our first house, and it was gray so I added an aqua door. I think the pink will be great!

  • The pink ones are my favorite! In fact when we moved here three years ago I told our realtor that pink would be my first choice, but there were no pink ones for sale at that time. 🙂

  • We prefer a brick house (unless we someday ever have a farmhouse LOL). Light colored brick or the faded “old” looking (red) brick. Our trim is a taupe color and then we can use color on the front door and shutters. Right now those are a deep green with just a touch of blue to it, which makes it a bit different from a hunter green. Call me crazy, but I love a “color scheme” (yes I plan my flowers LOL) for flowers of white/blue-purple and pink. Always. That is my love so I need house colors that work well with that. The green does. Not to mention I like verdigris (our lights are presently verdigris) and it works well with that also.

I always go by the pink house in Charleston with the concrete pig in front. LOL
