House #7 Update: Designing a Walk-in Pantry

Hey friends! I’m back with an update on our new build today! This past week they completed the shelving in the walk-in pantry (as my instagram stories peeps already know), and oh my goodness, seeing my vision come to life completely blew me away! It’s even better than I imagined it would be! They did an incredible job taking my notes and scribbles and turning them into this!

As soon as we decided to build an open concept floor plan I knew I wanted a walk-in pantry. (This space is about 7.5′ x 9′.) Rather than overload myself with Pin-spirtation, of which my pantry board is filled to the brim, I really tried to hone in on what would make the most sense for the way we live. Taking a good look at what we store and how we use our current pantry as well as thinking through what daily routines might look like in our new house really helped me to figure out what I wanted to do with this space from a design standpoint.

I opted for a glass door (there’s a protective film on it right now), so that this space would feel like an extension of the kitchen but would still have a little privacy. The door will be painted the same color as the base cabinets in here and our kitchen island ~ Sherwin Williams Hurricane Blue.

Because you’ll be able to see right in, I wanted something that would be both pretty and functional on that back wall. So I decided on wine storage, and this custom made shelving turned out so great!

I’m so in love with it! I had the guys that did all of our trim work build this storage piece rather than going through the cabinet company. And that was not only less expensive, but it also gave me the opportunity to create something unique.

I’m eventually planning on adding a herringbone backsplash in here which will compliment the wine storage design.

Tucked in the corner but easily accessible are a couple of shelves where a countertop microwave will go. I realize housing the microwave in the pantry may not seem convenient to some, but for the way we actually live this is going to work out perfectly.

Behind the door are more shelves for dry goods (about 8 inches deep).

The walls in here will be painted in Hurricane Blue in a flat finish and the shelving and trim will be done in Hurricane Blue in a semigloss. And eventually I will add a white subway tile backsplash.

I can’t wait to see this pantry get painted!

We’re getting so close to finally moving in, and I’m getting so excited! I’ll be back to share more updates very soon!

Wine Storage Dimensions

*Edited ~ I’ve had a quite a few people reach out asking for dimensions, so here you go! This piece was made from 3/4 inch boards and is 8.5 inches deep. So the top couple inches of the wine bottles will stick out. I think storage units where the bottle is flush with the shelf make it hard to see the bottle, so I opted for the bottle to overlap the edge. I also think that makes it easier to pull the bottle out. But that’s totally a personal preference. A typical wine bottle is about 12 inches tall with a 3 inch circumference.

  • On your wine shelves, are the diagonal pieces at a 45 degree angle? And do you kind providing shelf dimensions? I love it!

  • So practical and beautiful. Only thing I would have different is bottom cupboards would have been all drawers. Anxious to see it with the back splash up.

  • I did all drawers on the bottom in the kitchen. But for the pantry I opted for cupboards so that I’d have a place to store taller pots and large appliances, like my food processor, blender etc.
