Considering a Wine Cork Backsplash – Thoughts?

Hello friends and happy Monday! We had a productive weekend here at our seventh house and powered through lots of unpacking. I’m starting to see the light at the end of the moving tunnel! Which has me both excited and itching to get started on a project! Ha! The pantry is definitely the furthest along and the most organized space in the house right now, so it may be first on my project hit list.

I’m really loving having a countertop and prep sink in here!

I mentioned before that I eventually would want to add a tile backsplash in here. But I came across this huge bag of wine corks when I was unpacking this weekend, and now my wheels are turning.

What do you all think about a wine cork backsplash? I think it could be really cool in this little space! And I like that the color of the wine corks plays into the wood flooring.

I’m just not exactly sure where I would stop with a backsplash. Take it up, all the way around the window? Or just add a splash to the back wall below the wine storage?

I feel like a cork backsplash will be fun and unexpected! And I like that it could easily be changed down the road if I decide I’d rather have tile. What do you all think? Do you know anyone who has recycled their wine corks in this way.

  • I think this is a wonderful idea! Start with the area under the wine rack and then you can always add more. As you said, if you don’t like it you didn’t waste a lot of money.

  • I like the idea! I feel like there should be some kind of space between the backsplash and the bottom of the window and/or wine rack, just an inch or so. I don’t like backsplashes that go clear up to the bottom of cupboards.
Can’t wait to see what you come up with!

  • My vote is for back wall under wine storage only. I personally would do tile around window behind the sink for any water that will splash.
I’m sure whatever you decide will be great!
Excited to see the final decision.

  • I will say putting wine corks together is like a giant Tetris puzzle. I did a 16×16 board for our countertops to put hot things on. It took 144 corks!

  • Could you do a removable one where it looks cohesive but you’ve adhered them to those cork tiles maybe & attach the square to the wall?

  • I think the wine cork backsplash would take away from the beauty of this room. I envisioned dark floral wallpaper as the backsplash to continue with the moodiness.

  • I love your wallpaper idea (even though I am from the generation that has spent countless hours removing wallpaper and will not have it again in my home ). I can definitely picture your vision in this pantry!

  • I would do a small cork board for notes etc. not a backslplash. I would think it would be hard to clean. I love the room it is a wonderful space!

  • Yes! Do it! My husband and I built a bar in our basement and the top was all wine corks. We used epoxy to seal the top but we had so much fun laying out the design, finding corks from winery trips visits, and generally adding fun little touches like grouping winery names so it had ours and our kids initials. We have since moved and left the bar and we’re already back to saving the corks to do it again in our current home. It’s a great way to personalize a fun space too.

  • My first thought is DUST! I think that even with a vacuum attachment it won’t come clean. Novel, but maybe not practical. That’s my instinct, but I can’t wait to see what you do!

  • Seems like it would be impossible to clean. Can’t imagine you could wipe off grease or spaghetti sauce splatters. Can it be sealed?

  • Great designs now in removable wallpaper. Easy to apply and remove. Start with Tempaper. You can order sample sizes. Corks just don’t quite seem that they would be at home in that space. Maybe make a large cork trivet type thing and show all we naysayers how wrong we are ?

  • If it’s just in your pantry I think it’s a fabulous idea! It would tie in with your wine rack. Love it!! Congrats on moving in to your new beautiful home. ♥️

  • Love this idea! Super unique. I think you could cut the corks you have into 3 piece to stretch them farther. It would be fun to play with the cork vs wine stained cork in your pattern! I say go for it! a quick poly finish will keep it pretty protected too.

  • It will take one gazillion corks. I did a large bulletin board for our laundry one time and it took over 1000 corks. We had a ton, but I got the rest from restaurants. In our last house, we did a backsplash out of wooden wine box lids and it was beautiful. Maybe that would be an easier way to get a similar look.

I’m glad to see you added the sink in your pantry. I knew you’d get tons of use out of it- from flowers to coffee grounds. Everything is looking beautiful.

  • Thanks so much Sharon!

Yes, my main concern for the corks is that it would probably take me at least a year to collect as many as I’d need.
