Pantry Backsplash Tile Options – Fall 2020 ORC Week 2

I was all set to tackle our bedroom for the fall One Room Challenge, and then I got an email from the wallpaper supplier letting me know that the paper I ordered back in September wouldn’t be available to ship until mid to late November. Noooooo! By then the ORC would be over! So I had to quickly regroup and………I’ve decided instead to knock another project off my house to-do list while I wait for the wallpaper to arrive. This way I won’t be wasting the motivation that this six week challenge provides. Completely switching gears, I’ll be working on our walk-in pantry.

Now this won’t yield a very dramatic before and after because most of our pantry is already “done”. But seeing as how last week ended up being a bust, and there are just 4 weeks left to get this project done; I’m looking at the headstart I have in here as a really good thing!

pantry progress

I’ve always wanted to add a backsplash in here as our walk-in pantry is really more of a butler’s pantry. It’s a functional space with a sink where we store all of our countertop appliances as well as our microwave.

But after working on the layout and shelving design in here, decision fatigue started to set in; and rather than forcing myself to choose everything before moving in, I put a few things on hold. I figured I’d live with the space for a while before “finishing”.

But now I’m ready to be decisive again! So let’s chat about tile options!

The blue subway was a wild card. I figured I’d bring in a sample “just to see”. But as soon as I saw it in the space, it was an immediate, no.

A black marble backsplash has been something I’ve wanted to do in a space for a really long time. But to be honest, I don’t dislike the white and grey marble samples. And they do feel a little “safer”.

The hexagon was another wild card that I immediately crossed off as a no. I love a hexagon tile. But with the design of the wine storage in here, it feels way too busy.

So I’m down to these three options. And I’m also trying to decide if I want to carry the tile all the way up to the crown.

I think I know what I’m going to do, but I’d love to hear your thoughts! Which would you choose? Black marble, white marble or grey marble?

  • I can’t wait to see how this turns out. I love your walk in pantry. Since you ask, I think I would go with the gray. The black is beautiful but with how dark the wine bottles appear that might be too much black. The white would be nice and bright, but I really love how the darker lines in the gray one look with the wine bottles. Then again, it really does matter what type of backsplash you have in your kitchen.

  • The wallpaper being delayed is heartbreaking! I’ve been there with projects before. Glad you had a backup plan to switch to though. Can’t wait to see how it turns out. Love those wine racks, btw!

  • I think it will be lovely to have something reflective as the backsplash like the black tile. I wish I could show you mine in this comment. It is an antiqued mirror finish and something like that would also be a good choice.

  • I like the grey marble. I think the black might end up making the room seem to dark especially with the dark wine bottles. They might end up being less of a feature.

  • I think you’ll choose the black based on your other home choices and your adventurous sense of style. Because I’m not as adventurous I would choose the gray marble. Looking forward to seeing the finished space !

  • Don’t go all the way to the crown, having all tiles leaves no room for a picture or a calendar. Believe me I know. I bought a house 2 years ago and though my kitchen is updated there’s just too much tile.

  • Thanks! Yes, I was so bummed, but now I’m getting excited to knock out these pantry projects that have been on my to do list for awhile.
