One Room Challenge – Week 6 – Still Not Done

Well friends, my first time participating in Calling It Home’s One Room Challenge is ending in a big ol’ womp womp.  The wallpaper I ordered to install on the headboard wall has yet to be delivered.  (See the full design plan here.)  However, it is on the way to my house.  So hopefully some time next week I’ll be ready to share our finished guest bedroom.  Fingers crossed anyway!  Today, I’m sharing some progress pictures.  Even though I wasn’t able to get her done in the 6 week time frame, I’m still much further along than I would have been had I not decided to take on this challenge.  So I’m still going to call this a win!

Guest Bedroom Progress

Last week I installed the light fixture and got some help from my 12 year old in putting the bed together.  This week I put the bedding on and added in a few other design elements.

If you’ve been following this challenge from the very beginning you may remember that I picked up this large scale buffalo print duvet set on clearance at Bed, Bath & Beyond.  It was sold out for a while, but it looks to be available online again!   I love the juxtaposition of the masculine buffalo plaid against the tufted, curvaceous upholstered headboard.

I just love this red bed!  And I can not wait to see it up against the patterned wallpaper!  The teal blue canvas you see over above the red bookcase was an Etsy digital download that I purchased and had printed on canvas via Shutterfly.

Since guests will be sharing a bathroom with my daughter, I’m using a desk that can double as a vanity for a night stand on one side of the bed.  For the other side I brought in a small accent table and floor lamp.  I spray painted the dark bronze base of the lamp black to better coordinate with the space.

I’ll be so glad when the wallpaper finally arrives, so I can finish this room just in time to host guests for the holidays!

  • None of your rooms end in a womp, womp. This will be worth the wait! It’s looking great already!

  • Can you offer any tips for layering rugs over carpet? I just moved into a new house with carpet in the main floor living area. I hate the look of it (i’m accustomed to having a huge oriental rug under my couch and chairs), but the carpet is new so I’m not pulling it up right now. I tried putting my old oriental rug under the furniture but it rippled under the furniture legs and wrinkled whenever anyone walked on it. Would a thicker, heavier rug work better? Would a non-slip rug pad help or make it worse? Any ideas would be appreciated! I love how this room is coming together.

  • The red bed is fabulous!! And I love the idea of a double-duty desk next to the bed! The space looks great, but I’m sure the wallpaper will give it that final touch you were envisioning! Yay for holiday guests 😉 – Rachael

  • Yes, a thicker rug would work. How tall is the pile on the carpet? A non-slip pad may help, but I think it’s mainly more about a sturdier rug. I have layered rugs over the carpet in two of the bedrooms and I went with thick, sturdy rugs and am not having any issues. Hope this helps!

  • With or without wallpaper, it’s a beautiful room. You know what they say, the guests will be staying longer when you treat them to this level of luxury. Lucky guests :).

Btw, it keeps saying my comment looks like spam? Wonder if anyone else is having a hard time commenting?

  • Hmmm….not sure why that is happening, but thanks for alerting me. I’ll check into it! Thanks so much Linda! This was the kick in the pants I needed. Can’t wait for the next challenge. 🙂
