One Room Challenge Week 5 – The Bed is Finally Here!

Hey friends!  It’s time for another One Room Challenge update. I can’t even believe it’s already week 5!  Say what?  I have just one week left to finish this makeover.  Yikes.  For those just tuning in, for the first time ever, I decided to take Calling It Home’s bi-annual One Room Challenge.  In a nutshell, it’s a design challenge where you completely makeover a space in your home in just 6 weeks.  Some may think that sounds easy.  Six weeks, by most standards, is a decent amount of time.  I mean, whole entire houses get renovated on HGTV in a weekend.  How hard can 6 weeks be?  Well, this ain’t TV folks.  And I’m sure as heck not Joanna Gaines.

It usually takes me months, oh who am I kidding, it’s more like years, to makeover spaces in my home.  I’m a crock pot decorator.  I need time for my ideas to get cooking.  😉   Ha!  Can we make that a show?  Let’s call it “Slow Cooked Design”.  😉  I’m pretty sure it would be way too boring for TV.  It would be all, and on this episode the designer brought in a lamp………..crickets…….. yeah, no one wants to see that.

In all seriousness though, I decided to makeover our guest bedroom for this challenge because it’s the one room in our house I’ve always struggled with in terms of making design decisions.  I think because I love spaces that reflect the inhabitant’s personality, I find it difficult to decorate a space for a revolving door of people.  This room will serve my dad, mom and stepdad, in-laws, and friends from all over the country.  The people we host are all so different, yet I want them all to feel welcome when they come to stay with us. Many are using their vacation time to visit with us, so I want to inject a little “welcome to Charleston” vibe without going overly theme-y.  I guess you could say I’m going for a swanky hotel vibe with a bit of a beach vacation mood.  That makes sense right?

Week 5 Progress

Anyhow, enough with the chit chat.  You’ve seen the design plan.  Here’s where we stand now.

(Bed, Rug, Pendant, Desk, Desk Lamp)

It’s all starting to come together!  This rug is just…. gosh, I love it.  And the bed….the bed is basically my dream come true.  My 12 year old boy helped me put the bed together, and it was a pretty straightforward process.  Bravo to World Market for including actual words along with pictures in their assembly instructions….unlike that store with the first letter “I” that makes you want to hurt people with an allen wrench.  Just me?

If you follow me on Instagram you may have seen the “how to replace a ceiling fan” tutorial I shared on my Instastory.  No worries if you missed it as I’ll be sharing an easy to follow step-by-step tutorial here on the blog next week.  I promise even if you’ve never done any electrical work, you can absolutely do this!

The new light fixture is just so fun.  I love that bit of a coastal vibe it adds to the room.  And it is just so pretty at night!

I’m still loving this easy Ikea hack as well.

Hopefully the wallpaper arrives in the next couple of days.  Otherwise the room will only be partly finished by next Thursday.  It’s still farther along than it would have been had I not taken this one room challenge.

  • Love the red bed! We painted the back wall of my son’s room in red and the other 3 walls white. Then we used red accents throughout, and it’s such a cheery color!
    Good luck!
