Framing Children’s Artwork

I was sifting through a pile of my children’s artwork, looking for something to frame in my daughter’s room, when I found a painting my son made for me when he was three.  As soon as I found it I gasped.  I thought I had lost this piece in our last move, so I was thrilled to come across it again.  I knew it needed to be framed and hung immediately.  I found the perfect spot in our family room.

Although, obviously I had already put the Christmas decor away months ago.  Anyhow, I decided to replace the horse photograph (it will surely reappear in another room) with my son’s masterpiece.  The only problem was the painting was smaller than the opening in the matte.  To make up for that I used a piece of fabric as a backdrop.

I love the graphic punch the fabric adds.

This whole display with the ornate gold frame framing the black frame feels very “artsy” to me.  I love the fresh new look but mainly I just love seeing my son’s three year old masterpiece framed in a place where I  can enjoy it every day (especially because he’s almost 8 now – tear).

Just to freshen up the entire look, I also added a little ribbon trim to the lampshades with some double-sided tape.

My mornings blogging from the couch just got a little brighter.  It’s hard to not feel inspired when you’re looking at the creativity of a child.

Truly wonderful the mind of a child is – Yoda was right!

  • Aw, I absolutely agree. Kids artwork is one of my favorite things to showcase, hands down. And this piece looks so great here- great pop of color with a fun modern touch because of the fabric backing. Love it!

  • Great idea! Love the pop of color from the artwork and the fabric backing is genius! Looks like you've got your MOJO back. Have a great weekend.

  • i love your son's artwork! it reminds me of the map of the northeast…long island, ny in gold and rhode island in red…provincetown, ma in red near the top. FANTASTIC!!

  • love the double frame. we have many "masterpieces" framed and the older my kids get (12 &15) the more I appreciate them.

  • I think this artwork is stunning! I keep all my kids' work and love to go back every so often and sift through it all. Against the black-and-white fabric the eye is immediately drawn to it. It is perfect that you get to enjoy it more now. Btw, I am impressed with your pics/vignettes. I really have to get myself a new camera 🙂

  • I love how you have hung your son's art in a place of honor! The colors really work with the decor and the frames and matting give a lovely layered look. Sadly my kids are is in several shopping bags in the craft room. I want to display it but I haven't figured out the best way to do that in our house yet!

  • I need to do something similar — there are SO many pictures that my kids bring home. I was thinking about doing a kind of clothes pin line hanging project so we could switch them out, but framing them looks great, too.

  • You seriously couldn't find a piece of prettier artwork or more perfect for your house…..love the colors and the way you matted and double framed it!! You have a little Picasso over there!

  • Beautiful! The painting itself is amazing, but I love it paired with that fabric! And I'm thinking I need to add that gold greek key trim on my new lampshade!

  • This looks great Carmel! I love all of the layers, all the way out to the gold frame. By the way, I'm itching to paint something gold. Do you know what color you used on your gold entry chair? It seems so warm. Thanks!

  • OK…whoa…he did that when he was 3???? You need to put some canvas in front of him and let him go to it! So pretty….you had me at black and white!
