3 Step DIY Art Project

When it comes to the age old question of “what should I hang on the walls?” I pretty much follow these guidelines:

1.  You can never go wrong with a great mirror.  They’re timeless and always make a big statement.
2.  When purchasing art; be choosy.  Only buy what really speaks to you.  It doesn’t matter if it’s hand painted or a print that comes from Ikea, if you love it that’s all that matters.

Last but not least.

3.  What you’ll treasure the most will almost always be things that you made, your kids made, or those that represent something really special or meaningful.

The latest additions to the walls in my home are in my bedroom where I’m finally after 2 years of living here starting to put this room together.  You got a glimpse yesterday when I showed you the little workspace I carved out for myself.  Many of you asked about those mysterious numbers hanging over the desk.  ðŸ˜‰

They’re special dates to the hubs and I.  10/21 is our wedding anniversary, and 12/22 is the date of our engagement.  I wanted to add some personal touches to the room.  I’ve always loved the look of Courtney’s number art in her master bedroom, so I got to work on the simplest diy project.  It was 3 steps, required zero artistic talent or paint brushes, and took all of maybe 20 minutes from start to finish (not including the drying time).

I used some of the leftover wall paint (Martha Stewart Wrought Iron) to finger paint the numbers.  I love the look of the finger painting; it adds a little whimsy to the room.  The silver rub n buff on the edges frames the numbers really nicely, and while it’s hard to capture in photos it also adds a little metallic sparkle.

I hung them on the wall with command strips.  This was such an easy project, and I love the end result.  I used flat panel canvases because I already had them.  The way they flank the bed really highlights the mirror (Ballard Designs).  The best part is walking in to the room and seeing these numbers on the wall that are super special to us.  It’s kind of romantic without being overly mushy.  Plus now the hubs has absolutely no excuse to forget our anniversary, not that he ever has before.  Hmmm……..now where can I hang up my birth date?

So what about you, what do you like to hang on your walls?  Is anyone else kind of number obsessed?  Have you done any finger painting lately?  It was so fun.  You just might see some more finger painting over here!

  • Thanks for answering my question. It's a cute idea. I saw that you are going to Haven. Have a great time. Jordan and I are feeling out of the loop, but I can't cancel our annual Bicycle Virginia trip.

  • Carmel the creative genius is at it again……love the dark walls in your bedroom! I used to have that same bed in a queen but I sold it to get a king size bed…..so I could have more space at night…..

  • Sometimes the simplest ideas are the best! I love that you created something that is special to you, rather than just pulling something off the rack at Homegoods (which is always tempting to me). The white pops so nicely along with your mirror on the navy.

  • Thanks for using AMACO's Rub 'n Buff. Glad to see this worked on your project and the silver is a nice tie in to your wall lights.

We have another 15 colors available on our website if you ever want to try a different color. These can be hard to find at retail.

  • We saw your new nightstand purchase on Facebook and had to click ALL around but we FINALLY figured out what the numbers were all about. We see a lot of DIY projects with numbers and our curiosity was just peaked! Thanks for answering the question!
