The Age Old Question

Those are gorgeous sconces and the gold finish has come back. So the brass is o.k. again. Knew it would come back eventually.

i am with kim- brass has made a big comeback, and i like the shine they add. i think in small doses it works beautifully, and your entry is prime example.

I actually like the brass. I think its adds a lot to the fixture. If you were to spray paint i think it would dull the look.

I also like the brass. Is it possible to change the little shade? That might provide the new look you're looking for.

I've been on a spray paint rampage lately, but I don't think I would spray paint these. I would leave the existing finish and update the shade. Will the wall color stay the same? What is the rest of your color scheme? What a fun project!

I LOVE them the way they are. I think they have a rich quality to them and remind me of a European hotel lobby {in a wonderful way}. I say keep them as is.

Sounds like the verdict is don't spray them leave them brass. I'm thinking if it has taken this long to decide it's because my subconscious doesn't want me to paint them 🙂

Brass is a classic. Just look at Colonial Williamsburg. And here in Lexington, it is widely used. I think people in blog land gave it a bad name. I wrote a post about the difficulty I had making a decision about the hardware for our new place because of brass's bad rep. We ended up selecting something that I haven't seen anywhere – distressed antiqued nickel by Baldwin Brass. It is more expensive than most of their finishes, so, that is why it isn't very popular. I hope that since it is not in style, it won't go "out of style."

Carmel…. I think it may be an "age" preference. I'm wondering if your readers that said leave them brass are all of your generation. Me, being older, I'm so over brass. I've had it in my house for years, and it's just time to go away! 🙂

I'm not a fan of Williamsburg style light fixtures. But they do sell for decent money in Historic areas…..I'd sell them or consign them at a local antiques mart, then buy something new from Gallery or CSN…

Could you use that antiquing glaze to tone town the brass a bit? I like the look a lot and think they would be great left untouched, but what about just a light coat of the glaze as a compromise?
