Carving Out a Workspace………

While I am absolutely not complaining, I don’t have any spare rooms to claim all for myself in this house.  So, I have to get creative when it comes to finding: spaces to store my craft junk and places where I can “work”.  I use the word “work” loosely because blogging doesn’t feel like work.  However, I feel like I need a spot, doesn’t have to be a big one, where I can sit and think and write and upload photos and plan blog posts and e-mail readers and write thank you notes to blogging buddies and………………… dream about what I want my blog to be when it grows up – you know a little spot where I can work.

I finally carved out a little workspace all for me……………….

even if I do have to share it with the hubs.  This is his side of the bed.  So, my workspace is also his nightstand, and he said, “So long as I have an alarm clock you can do whatever you want.”  Sounds good to me!  I liked his response so much, I got him a new alarm clock (it was part of his birthday present).

It’s from Crate and Barrel, and it’s on sale right now!  Okay, but enough about my desk also being the hubs nightstand.  Let’s get back to the part where I tell you how hard it was to find a desk that was the right size for this space.  I had originally envisioned something thrifted, but alas nothing I found would work.  I almost gave up hope after 6 months of looking.  And then I was walking though the Ridge of the Garden (Garden Ridge) when I spotted a chair & desk set for $99.  I’m not using the chair that came with this desk, instead I’m using one that I made over.  I’m not a big fan of matching sets and I really only needed the desk; but I had to buy them as a set.  This desk was perfectly sized for this spot, so I had to bring it home.  I gave myself the go ahead because I feel like it’s 2 pieces of furniture in one – a desk and a nightstand.  ๐Ÿ˜‰
It’s ummmmmm………..not the best quality piece of furniture I own,  but it’s the right size – and in this case – size really does matter.  ( I had to – I’m sorry.)  Anyhow, I sanded the edges to make the desk look a little distressed, and I used a knob I already had instead of the hideous drawer pull that came in the box.  All in all, I think sometimes it’s okay to put lipstick on a pig (no offense to Garden Ridge but this desk looked better in the picture on the box).  Of course, I’ll bet now that I have this desk, I’ll probably come across tons of old desks that are the right size.  Is that not always how it works?  No matter, I’m perfectly happy with this perfectly-sized yet not so perfectly-made desk.  Mainly, I’m just thrilled to have my very own workspace!
The horse pencil holder was given to me my sweet friend Cassie.  It makes me smile every day!
I’m kind of obsessed with the Martha Stewart office supplies at Staples, and this dry erase vinyl cling just had to come home with me.  It is so great for planning out my week.  I feel all bloggy professional as I attempt to plan out what I’ll be blogging about every week.  Ha!  Unlike, how I usually just fly by the seat of my pants.  Maybe this weekly calendar will help me organize the blog – we’ll see.
Who’s surprised I have red paper clips?!  ๐Ÿ˜‰  No one.
Inside this little desk drawer, I keep all the essentials.
I made little file folders with some scrapbook paper and MS labels.  Can we talk about these thank you cards I found at Target?!
Gratitude with attitude – love it!
So there you go.  Good things really do come in small packages.  Who needs a whole room when you can have a teeny, tiny corner?
You may remember that having my bedroom painted was part of my Mother’s Day gift.  I’ll give you a little more of a peak into this room tomorrow as well as the specific color deets.  I told you I went bold.  Me likey.  I’ve always loved a dark master bedroom.
On a random side note, please pray for the life of this plant.
I’ve never and I mean never kept a house plant alive.  This one came from Lowe’s and the tag said, “Plants of Steel”, so I figured maybe it might have a chance.  I don’t know.  I’m a little doubtful.
I’m sitting here right now………………
feeling thankful.  This little blog brings so much joy.  I look at my horse pencil holder and I smile.  This blog has brought me some very special friends.  I hope you know what a treat it is to write, to connect, to be inspired by you, to learn from you, and to dream with you.
One night not that long ago, I was sitting at the kitchen table trying to work up the nerve to hit – publish.  Tonight I’m still working up the nerve, but it’s from my very own workspace.  And that has a lot to do with you.
Big HUGE Thanks,

  • That's perfect! You are so organized! I love your room color and the alarm clock is so cute! Too bad it doesn't work for iphones.

  • I can totally relate to wanting/needing a work space. I keep trying to find one but somehow always end up back at my dining room table. This may motivate me a little! I am nosy though and dying to know what the framed numbers represent??

  • It looks fabulous! I definitely need to carve out a blogging space for myself as well – currently I just write from the couch, but I think I might be a bit more productive if I didn't have all of the distractions! I love the wall color, as well – it's beautiful!

  • Love your new little workspace! I'm also obsessed with the Martha Stewart office supplies at Staples! So cute! And I LOVE those thank you cards!! Hilarious! Looking forward to meeting you at Haven in just a few short days!! Yay!!

  • Oh, Carmel, I just love it. I just picked up a couple of Martha supplies yesterday. I think the color is beautiful and you did a great job styling it all. I can just picture you there blogging away! So thankful to have met through out lil' blogs.

  • The wall color is perfect but I also love a dark master bedroom, ours is navy right now. What a great little space you made for yourself, it's so pretty and I can just envision you sitting in the chair typing away. Hoping your plant makes it!

  • Such a super space. I know what you mean about a little spot just for you. I use the buffet in the breakfast room. But like you, it is mine and I love it. Your desk area is fabulous. You did a great job planning and decorating it. Hugs, Marty

  • What a great post – I especially loved the last part. It's amazing what blogging brings about! Great workspace too – you worked wonders with that desk and all of the great styling – well done! Love the paint you chose for your bedroom, too…it looks similar to the color I just painted our powder room, called Cracked Pepper. I thought it was going to be charcoal, which it sort of is, but it also has a deep blue hue to it and it's great!

  • I was about to be that annoying person that asked you what the numbers meant, even though you already told someone you'd tell us soon. Thank goodness I read your comments first! Love the nook! This is a great idea and might have to steal it!

  • Awww you are always so positive and grateful – which makes reading a blog such a joy!!
Oh and your style and projects rock ๐Ÿ™‚
LOVING the color of your walls – dramatic, dark, cavelike with a contrast of white. Can't wait to see more.
Your new workspace is perfectionโ€ฆ.organized and all yours! (except for the corner with the alarm clock on it!)

  • I love your room and the desk. Can I ask what the dimensions of the desk are. I've been looking for something smaller for a room in my place too.
