HAPPY 4th OF JULY!
I can’t think of a better day to show you all the hang out area I created in our garage. You’ll see why very soon. You know that I’ve decided to get our garage organized once and for all this summer and that my plan is to tackle one section at a time. I got the gardening station all set up and started working on the tool section – though it’s not quite done yet. I told you all on Monday that we are having a new screened in deck built. You may remember that we had an outdoor sofa on our old deck. Once the new screened in deck is built we plan to put a great, big sectional out there, so we needed to decide what to do with our sofa. Long story short, we thought about selling it on Craig’s List but ultimately decided to keep and use it to create a hang out area in our garage.
We have a two car garage, though unless we both drove smart cars I have no idea how 2 cars would ever fit inside. Even if we got rid of everything else we store in our garage we wouldn’t have enough room for both of our cars. So my plan is to make the most of the space we have allowing one car to fit easily inside. Which basically means we have space for a hangout area. And while you might be thinking – who on Earth needs a garage hang out area? This little space is going to be so clutch for our family.
We live in a neighborhood with lots of kids, and our house tends to be the hang out spot – especially in the summer. I love having the kids over here, but I also like to keep my sanity which means keeping them outside playing and snacking as much as possible. If you know anything about Kentucky you know we get lots of rain in the summer which can put a damper on outdoor play. Now I can keep them entertained outside while the storm passes over! This new spot will also be a great place for my kids to sit down and remove muddy cleats, boots, sneakers – you get the picture.
No I did’t decorate this space just for the 4th of July. Call me crazy but I plan to keep those flags up there. In the midst of sorting, purging and cleaning I realized that I had a ridiculous number of American flag stakes. I think it’s because I could never find them in my previously chaotic garage, so I just kept buying new ones. Anyhow, I decided to pull them off the stakes and staple them to wall – because well, why not? I plan to put cabinets on another wall so this area seemed like fair game for something fun, and using what I already have is always so key – especially in the garage.
Speaking of using what we already have, I just so happened to find a carpet remnant (from when we had our carpet replaced last year) rolled up collecting dust in a corner of our garage. After I vacuumed all the spider webs off I used this awesome stuff pictured below.
The folks at Rustoleum and Home Depot sent me this cool new product called NeverWet. It’s super easy to use – you spray it on just like spray paint. It’s a two step process, but it’s pretty quick. And it definitely lives up to its name. I did a water pour test, and it just beaded up and wiped off – pretty cool for rugs in areas like my garage where it will no doubt see some muddy shoes and wet soccer gear. It says that it will leave a haze on fabrics, but I didn’t notice any color change at all on this carpet remnant. You will probably want to do a test first on any fabric. I wouldn’t use this on a nice indoor rug as it does make the material feel stiffer; but for mudroom/laundry room rugs it would be so great.
Our newly organized garage hang out area really does make me smile and the fact that it cost me nothing but a little time isn’t half bad either. Maybe someday the bumps in the carpet remnant will get worked out – but if not – no big, it is just a garage after all -right?
I feel like we might need a ping pong table out here now! 😉 Hope you all have a wonderful day!
Oh I love, love, love this idea. I use to have a place in the garage for my children to play and people teased me because I mopped it. lol Well, it had to be clean. I should have had a rug. This looks fabulous and I am sure you will use it a lot. Hugs, Marty
