Despite a couple of previous attempts to organize, my garage has remained a hot mess. Sure I’ve managed to clean it up a few times, but it never fails to end up looking pretty chaotic after awhile. I think I’ve reached a breaking point though, as I’ve decided to organize the garage one area at a time until it’s finally whipped into good shape. And this time I mean business! #watchout #womanonamission
This was the current state of sad affairs. I only had the guts to show you one wall. That just goes to show you how bad the rest of it is if this side was the least offensive. Someone hold me.
It would be really easy to get overwhelmed, but I’ve decided to take it one section at a time. Who has the time or patience to tackle a huge mess like this in one day? No one. I’m hoping to create a domino effect as one area gets organized, I hope it motivates me to move on the next until it’s all done. Fingers crossed.
I started by clearing one section and having the kids help me paint. Painting an entire garage can be quite burdensome but painting in sections is fairly easy to do. My kids are always wanting to help me paint. Apparently using a paint roller looks like great fun to a 9 and 6 year old. I thought the garage would make for good practice as I could care less about any paint drips on the floor.
I decided to use some of the leftover paint from the basement bathroom. It’s a nice soothing blueish grey – Dutch Boy Inspiration Blue.
Then once the paint was dry I put together the “gardening station”.
I spray painted (Kyrlon’s Periwinkle) this old, outdoor table that was just taking up space in another area of the garage.
I used a leftover piece of bead board as a backdrop for the scrap wood shelves I made. The actual shelves are old fence boards.
I used long nails as hooks for my gardening tools and glued a drawer pull to a piece of scrap wood to hold chalk. I use chalk quite a bit when we’re entertaining outdoors, so I wanted to keep it easily accessible.
I really love the way this little corner of the garage has shaped up – everything I need to work in the yard is all right here!
I made sure to keep the most heavily used items in an easy to reach (I’m a short 5′ 3″ girl) spot, so hopefully I don’t have any trouble keeping this area looking nice and organized!
Okay, gardening station done – now it’s time to move on to the “tool area”. I am so not looking forward to it – time to put my big girl pants on and quit my whining. Is your garage on your summer hit list? Why are the areas that see the most traffic almost always the ones that are the most unorganized? Is it just our house? Is your garage beautifully clean and organized? Wait, if the answer is yes, don’t tell me – or I’ll be forced to hate you. 😉
Our garage is a disaster. It is bad when our kayaks have priority in the garage instead of parking the car inside. I like the idea of one section at a time and a garden center. Ok looks like a garage project is now on my to do list.
