easy bike storage

Hey friends and Happy Monday!  We had such beautiful weather this weekend here in Charleston that I’m itching for school to get out for the summer.  I’m trying to savor these last couple of work weeks before summer vacation begins and I have zero time to myself, but I’m also ready to hang up my homework helper, lunch packer, 6:30 am breakfast maker hat for a few months.  Anyhow, today I’m popping in to share a little something that has been kind of life changing for me, I know, cue the dramatics.  Really though coming up with a good bike storage solution has been such an issue for my family.

bike rack for garage

In every garage of every house we’ve called home storing our bikes so that they are out of the way, organized and not constantly falling over has been a struggle.  We’ve done the bike hooks on the wall thing.  But the kids were never able to get their bike put away by themselves which would result in bikes thrown in the garage haphazardly until mom or dad put them away.  I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve tried to get my own bike out and accidentally knocked over my husband’s bike; or the number of times I’ve had to get out of my car in the driveway to move a bike out of the way so I could pull into the garage…..which can be especially annoying when it’s pouring down rain.

Anyhow, last week while my dad was in town and determined to get our garage whipped into shape he and my husband put their heads together to come up with a bike storage solution, and afterwards I was like, why in the sam heck did it take us this long to do this?!  And the best part of the whole thing is that it was the easiest, simplest solution ever!  No diy’ing involved with very little effort or expense – perfect right?!  My hub decided what we needed was a bike floor rack, the type of rack you often see at public parks.  I originally thought that buying something like that would probably be outrageously expensive, but to my surprise this super sturdy, easy to assemble, adjustable floor rack only cost $36.87!!!

I could literally not believe that a less than $40 storage solution for our bikes was out there all this time and we had no idea, which is exactly why I’m telling you all about this.  Why we didn’t get one of these things sooner is beyond me.  It makes storing the bikes so easy.  The kids are able to get their bikes in and out with no problem at all.  There is no longer any issue with tipping all the bikes over on accident as the rack keeps them all in place even if they get bumped.  Seriously y’all, I’m in love with this thing!  It’s the little things that make the biggest difference I tell ya!

We ride bikes together as a family almost daily so this rack is truly a game changer for the organization of my garage, and I just love how easy it is for the kids to use.  I’m all about them doing things for themselves.

If I had known it was as simple as ordering one of these amazing bike floor racks I would have done this way sooner!

People ask me all the time about my bike.  It’s a 7 speed Schwinn Hybrid, and I love it!  I’ve had for about a year and it’s been a great bike.  Bike basket sold separately.

It’s so nice to be able to park in the garage without any bikes in the way!

Are there any simple solutions totally changing the game in your life right now?  I’ve been a mother for almost 12 years now, and I can’t believe I haven’t had one of these bad boys in my garage from day one.

  • The problem is, you have to have a garage big enough for one of these 🙁 We’ve used the hooks for our own bikes, but now that the kids are riding, it’s not a great solution for the reason you point out – they can’t lift their bikes on/off the hooks.

  • I should clarify – the rack itself doesn’t look huge at all, just storing bikes this way in general (on the ground, in a row). The rack looks great.

  • This particular rack is adjustable so you could use for less bikes and it will take up less room. We have 5 bikes because we like having an extra for when guests come in town to visit. The space it takes up is as much as bikes on the floor take up – so if you don’t have room for bikes to be parked then it won’t work, but since it’s adjustable you could always break it up so you don’t have to store all of them in a row. It provides a few different options.

  • Oh my goodness! Posted about riding bikes today too and we soooooo need this. For all of the same reasons you listed. They are hanging on the wall and no one but R can get them down. Or. . .they are thrown somewhere totally in the way! LOVE this. And riding bikes together really is our favorite. xo

  • How funny that we both wrote about riding bikes today! Girl, you will love this bike rack. Seriously, it’s a garage game changer!

  • I am so with you! We did this a couple years ago I was shocked at how inexpensive and efficient it is. Your garage looks so neat! I sort mine once a year and it’s awful again within months. I blame the kids… and the pets… and a little raccoon that comes in for snacks.
