Lucky Number Seven

There’s a chance you saw this picture on my Instagram Stories this past Friday.  So many of you freaked out, like what?!?!?!?!?  😉

Today I’m sharing our big news!

Exciting News at Our Fifth House

So, yes, we are moving!  Yes, we are selling our house and moving into what we think will be our lucky number seven!  Our Seventh House – I still can’t believe it!

But this news is slightly anti-climatic because all of these things aren’t going to be happening for quite some time.  In fact nothing is actually happening right now.  Except last Friday we popped open a bottle of champagne on a plot of dirt and trees we just bought!  And with that begins the next chapter of our house adventures.

Let me back up a bit and give you a little more of the story.  When we moved to South Carolina from Kentucky almost three years ago we had one weekend, as in three days, to find a house.  For a lot of reasons.  One being that our house in Kentucky sold a bit faster than expected, which was a good thing.  Also, we closed on our Kentucky house faster than usual because the buyers wanted to move in with time to get settled before the summer was over.  Again, that was a good thing.  But because we didn’t want to move into a rental until we could find a house here in the Charleston area, mainly because we didn’t want to move twice in such a short period of time or pay for storage, it was important to us that we find a house quickly.

And we have LOVED this house.  We have really LOVED this neighborhood.

While we haven’t been actively pursuing a move, we’ve pretty much known from the day we moved in that we would eventually want to move again if we found the right scenario.

For a number of reasons, like wanting more space between houses, wanting a more private backyard and possibly one with a pretty view.

So we’ve kept our eye out on the market to see if anything that fit our criteria would pop up within our price range.  And inevitably we’d see something with more privacy and/or a view but the inside of the house would be so dated that to buy the house and do all of the upgrading would put us way outside of our budget.  Or we’d find something that completely matched all of our house goals and it wouldn’t be in our ideal location.

A custom build?  Wasn’t even on our radar.  Mostly because all of the places where building is happening here aren’t locations that appeal to us.  There was just this one area, which is very close to where we currently live, where we would even want to build, and all of the lots in that area had already been sold.  In fact there were just two lots left that hadn’t already been built on, but both of those lots had long been sold.

And then one day I was riding my bike, and I noticed a sale sign on a lot that I would ride by all of the time.  The owners of that lot bought it a couple of years ago with plans to build and retire here, but decided they wanted to move farther south.  And so began the process.

The hubs and I both fell in love with the lot!

And last Friday it officially became ours.

It honestly happened so fast that it doesn’t even seem real yet.  And because we’ve never custom built before we’re planning to take this process very slow.  We’re going to be very intentional about every step of this process.  Which means you won’t be seeing much or really any progress for quite some time.  We’ve settled on a builder and an architect.  And we’re in the beginning stages of coming up with a house plan.  That process alone could take quite a while because I have some very specific ideas regarding floor plan and window placement.  After 6 houses I have some definite ideas on how I want rooms to flow and what rooms I want to receive all the natural light.

So in a nutshell, that’s our big news!  Because we’re SO far off of actually doing anything I considered waiting to let you all in on this news.  But ultimately I decided to share because I’ve always brought you all along for the ride when it comes to our house adventures.

So Our Seventh House is on the radar……..I’m thinking it may be time for some rebranding around here.  😉  Do you all have any ideas for a new blog name?  I’ve been blogging at ourfifthhouse.com for so long that I can’t even imagine changing, but when we finally move into our seventh home it’s going to be a little confusing.  😉

At least I’ve got some time to think about it.  For now we celebrate the beginning of a new adventure!  Thank you all for coming along on the ride!

  • Congratulations! You are living my dream. First the move to Charleston (ie, Heaven on Earth) and now you’re building your dream home. We’re making our annual pilgrimage to IOP in two weeks and every time we visit I fantasize about packing up and moving permanently….sigh…..someday.
For now, I’ll live vicariously by following along on your blog!

  • Congrats!! After all your experience, you’ll have a blast designing your own house! We bought land right after we got engaged and spent the first year of our marriage designing our house (we did the blueprints & everything) and then the 2nd year of our marriage, my husband (and a few subcontractors) built our house….We’ve been in it happily since Dec 2002! It amazes me how well we did – so few things we’d change after all this time. Taking that entire year to do the planning was really worthwhile….

  • Congratulations! this is exactly the news I had guessed it was after seeing your stories! You are going to be fabulous at designing a dream home. Cannot wait to follow along!

  • Congratulations! Can’t wait to see your plans.

I think you should change to “Our Forever House.”

  • We built our last 2 houses and learned from each process. If I were to build again I would put more emphasis on energy efficiency, storm protection (I live in FL) and high tech options. Of course design and lifestyle are important too. We went from a family of 4 and now 14 years later to empty nesters and lifestyle does change. We have a 2 story & pool now and I would go single level, no pool next time. Keep the future in mind when planning. You will have a blast though so enjoy yourself.

  • Congratulations! Did you get a water view behind the trees? That would be fabulous for you!

  • WOW, this is so amazing, congrats. I hope to learn a thing or more from the entire beautiful process, because you’re too good at designing
