we sold our house!

Over the past few weeks I’ve eluded to the fact that I had some big news to share………….and today I’m finally able to spill the beans!

our fifth house - we sold our house!

The whole thing happened so fast that I’m just now starting to catch my breath.  I feel like the past few weeks have literally been a whirlwind!  It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster experience with some ups and downs, some excitement and some stress, but I for one would rather be on the ride than standing on the sidelines looking up and wondering, allowing fear to hold me back.

our fifth house - we sold our house!

To give you the story in a nutshell………..The hubs and I have always dreamed of one day retiring in Charleston, South Carolina.  It’s our favorite city.  If you’ve been following me on Instagram for the past few years than you know my family loves to vacation in Kiawah Island/Charleston area.  We’ve been vacationing there every year since we were married almost fifteen years ago.

It’s a city that’s always been in our hearts, and one we’ve dreamed of living in for many years.  But we never thought moving there before retirement would ever be an option due to my husband’s line of work.  Welllllllllll, a few months ago my hub, after over a year of working towards getting this promotion, landed his dream job within in his company and with that came the opportunity to basically live wherever we wanted.  SO we jumped!  Dreaming is great…….but taking steps towards making those dreams a reality is even better!  We decided to just see what would happen if we put our house on the market.  We figured since we didn’t necessarily have to move we would list without an agent and attempt to sell by owner.  We thought if it’s meant to be something will happen and if not then we’ll know it’s not the right time to make the move.

We listed the house for sale at the end of May and, to my surprise and utter shock, three weeks later we were under contract!  And last Friday we officially closed and handed the keys, the garage door openers, and the house that has been my baby for the past five years over to the new owners.

I’m not going to lie, it was a little bittersweet.  I handled the closing day on my own, since my hub was traveling, and I shed a few tears alone that day.  Our fifth house was so much more than the fifth house we’ve called home; it was a labor of love and a home where we’ve shared many special moments as a family.  This is the house that inspired me to start this little blog, and I feel like in a lot of ways both big and small this house brought me back to life.  For me, closing this chapter wasn’t easy.

My daddy and I built a swing set together in this backyard.  This is the house where both of my children learned to ride their bikes.  It’s where we said our final farewells to both Prince and Jake, and it’s where we opened our hearts again and welcomed two new fur babies to the family.

It was so much more than a house to me, and for the rest of my life I will always look back at the five years I spent here with nothing but fond memories.  I’m so super grateful to have chronicled it all on this little blog.

But as hard as it might be to close a really great chapter……..starting a new one is super exciting!

I’m so super pumped about moving to Charleston!  I’m still pinching myself that it’s even happening!  I literally feel like I’m dream walking.  I feel like I’m going to go on vacation and never come back home.  Ha!  I know it’s not going to be like that to live there, but being able to call my dream city home feels pretty darn fantastic.

I can’t wait to show you all our new digs there.  My head is already spinning with ideas for our new house!!!!!   #oursixthhouse   The plan for the blog is to keep the same name.  I feel like I owe it to our fifth house to keep the original inspiration behind the blog alive.  The site will be getting a redesign, but other than that you can still find me right here at www.ourfifthhouse.com.

So much fun stuff coming in the next few weeks!  I hope you’ll continue to follow along on our next adventure!

  • Moving is really such a bittersweet moment, but it seems like you have so much to look forward to!
Charleston is beautiful, and I am sure you will get tons of decorating inspiration from the scenery!

  • Would you feel comfortable writing about your kids' reactions to the move? Are they excited about switching schools, or were they resistant to the idea at any point? (I can tell from the pics that they look happy about it now!) We are probably going to be moving to a different school district when our kids are in middle school, so I'm curious how that worked out.

  • OMYGOSH!!!! I'm so excited for you! Charleston is my favorite city other than where I live. If I didn't live in Ashland, VA I would live there. My sister and her family live there too. Love me some Charleston!!!

  • Congratulations! I was born in SC and my father's family all lives in Charleston. It is, indeed, a special place. I cannot wait to see what beautiful creations and memories you create in your new home! Best wishes!

  • Congratulations!! We love Charleston. Cannot wait to see your new home and what you create there. And, next time we are there on vacation we will have to get together!!

  • I am on my way home from visiting friends in Charleston as I type this; it is truly a special place! I look forward to your upcoming posts and I admire your fearlessness!

  • Congratulations! We have the same dream, so maybe we'll be neighbors some day! Lexington is losing a good one. 🙂

  • Congrats! We vacation often in that area (we particularly like to stay on Seabrook), and my sister and BIL have a condo in Mt. Pleasant where they plan to move (retire) in the next few years. We started out visiting IOP – which has grown and become too commercial for us (other than the Wild Dunes area). We've stayed on many of the other islands. Love the area. We are hot and humid enough here though – not sure I could handle the Charleston area, not to mention we are not big city people. (We live somewhat rural.) Our families/friends are here too. (We live in TN.) I didn't mean to write a book!! Will be looking forward to hearing about your new place. Good luck with the move! We've been married 33 years and are in our third (and probably final house – we built it with that in mind)!! Congrats – how exciting!!

  • You will have this sixth house just the way you want it by the time your husband retires! Lucky you! Have fun on this new journey! It was meant to be.

  • Holy crap, I did NOT see that coming. I, too, would be interested in hearing about the kid's move to a new school/friends/etc. Congrats!

  • Such awesome news! I cannot wait to see your new house! We just moved into our 8th home (military) and I totally get the excitement/ sadness you must be feeling. Best of luck on your new adventure and may you and your family continue to be blessed!

  • Congrats to your family! I still have yet to visit there, but it is on my list! I will continue to follow your blog! Such inspiration 🙂

  • Wishing you all well in Charleston! It looks as if the kids are on board which is one of the tricky parts of moving far away. Can't wait to see what you do with The Sixth House!

  • OMG this is so awesome Carmel! I couldn't be happier for you and your sweet family. This is such a testament to the power of hard work and dreaming big. A huge congratulations to your husband on his promotion. What an amazing time for you! I wish you a smooth move and so much happiness in your new home.

  • Congratulations! I can understand how it is a bittersweet feeling. I would be sick to leave that house after putting so much time and myself into it. But you are following your dreams and that is so cool for you and your family to have this opportunity. I love Charleston too, would love to live there so I cannot blame you at all for moving! Cannot wait to see your sixth house.

  • Congratulations! You are not only moving to the city that always has my heart, but to my home town!!! A couple years ago I was flying home from Boston for a visit and the woman next to me asked, "what was it like?!" I'll tell you what it's like…a humid, friendly, delicious, buggy, and beautiful place to grow up. And you will love it!! If you need a local's take on the city, please email!

  • Congratulations!!! Charleston is amazing!! We vacationed on Isle of Palm last summer. Excited to see the new house and hear all about the move — good luck!! 🙂
