Hiding the Air Conditioning Units

As if designing and building a swing set and playhouse wasn’t enough to do in just two short weeks, my dad also built a little fence around our air conditioning units.  Let’s face it – air conditioning units aren’t pretty.  He built this fence in a little over an hour, and he got to work so fast that I never even had a chance to take a before picture!

This is so much better than what we had going on over here before – you’ll just have to take my word on that.  I would have loved for the fence to be a bit higher to hide all the other ugly junk, but my dad said something about air flow- yada yada yada.  I decided to paint the boxes the same color as I painted the fence in an attempt to make it all blend together.  That does help, but I think this fall I’ll plant something in front that will get tall enough to hide this a little better.  For now, I’m happy to see this side of the house looking less hideous than it did before.

It’s such an improvement, you have no idea.  I know we have a ton of other yard work to do, but little by little it is getting done.

That little fence was definitely a step in the right direction.  It cost less that $30 to buy the wood and was done in just over an hour.

It only has two sides which were both constructed the same.

The posts were dug into the ground and surrounded by gravel.

(No idea what that black thing is – just now noticed it.)   We left the back open for easy access.

This little fence was so simple to build that I could have done this on my own!  Although it may have taken me a lot longer than it took my dad.

Does your house have an “ugly side”?  Have you come up with a way to hide your ac units?  After seeing how simple this was, I’m kicking myself for not doing this sooner!

  • These are clever! You did a really nice job with them! You could also get some word to make a lid over top and store like a plant or some other decoration over top of it. Just make sure the lid isn't completely attached so you can remove it when it comes time for cleaning the air conditioner or having your air conditioning devices repaired!

  • This is an awesome article and very interesting. I just put a new air conditioning unit in my house this past summer and it has worked out great. I think it is very important to have the right installation during this process because it can be very tricky and these products need to be hooked up properly. My neighbor owns a car dealership and his one warehouse needed a new unit. I told him that a good option is Carrier Air Conditioning because they have more industrial products. They also have ventilation products that businesses can rent.
