dining room on the screened porch/deck

our fifth house: outdoor dining space

When our contractor drew up the plans for our new screened in deck I was immediately excited about the new staircase placement (even though I was a little bummed about having to relocate our fire pit area).  Moving the staircase from the back to the side meant I’d have a better set-up for arranging the furniture, as I would’t have to account for a walkway through the room.

You can see on my hideous pen-scrawled diagram above where the old staircase was and where the new staircase is now.  Eliminating the need to walk through the room to get to the staircase works so much better and makes the space that much more livable.  For a girl who loves arranging furniture – this was pretty much a dream come true.  Since the foot print of the space is a rectangle, eliminating the need for a walkway to the stairs, meant I could use furniture to easily set up 2 different areas in this one space.  I’m all about arranging furniture in a way that will allow you to get the most out of a room.  Having an outdoor dining room and living room on our screened porch is pretty much a dream come true!

I’m not quite done with the living area yet, but at least the dining area is done!

I showed you the quick makeover I gave the bentwood chairs last week.  As for the table, that I found at the same thrift store, I didn’t do anything except to add a few coats of Helmsman, to protect it from the elements.

On a screened porch I’m not sure the it was necessary, but I figured it was better to be safe than sorry.  And it does have a really pretty shine.

We’ve been trying to enjoy as much time out there as possible before winter makes its official grand appearance.  I’m hoping to get the living area done before it gets too cold – wish me luck!

Are you still enjoying your outdoor spaces?  Or is it already too cold where you live?

  • You'll love an outdoor room for dining and gathering, hope you'll have plenty of time to enjoy before the weather sends you inside. Think the poly coating was an excellent idea despite the porch being a semi-protected area … its amazing how much rain and moisture can find its way onto the horizontal surfaces of a screened porch. Sometimes our entire table top is one big puddle. We're having an incredibly early cold spell for us but I have hopes of more moderate temps returning and being able to eat Thanksgiving dinner on our screened porch, wearing heavy sweaters, warm throws over our laps, and an outdoor safe space heater running πŸ™‚ Tradition, love it!

  • It looks so cozy! Great place to sit and have a nice glass of red and listen to the silence. πŸ™‚ Not to rub it in, but living in San Diego has spoiled us. We can enjoy the eternal spring weather year round.

  • What an amazing space. How are you ever going to get anything done ever again? πŸ˜‰ I'd want to linger there with my coffee in the morning and then have wine at night. I'd never get up. It looks so peaceful!
