happy cookbooks

Well, first, I just have to THANK YOU all so much for all of your sweet comments on yesterday’s post.  To say that I was blown away by your sweet, uplifting words is an understatement.  And those of you who shared your own stories left me teary-eyed on more than a couple occasions.

Today I’m sharing a simple little  – dare I call it a “project”  – that has simplified my life in the kitchen and has left me wondering why I didn’t do it sooner.   I’m not gonna lie – as a blogger  – I often do things  – little things – around my home or in my everyday life and think – this is so not blog worthy – but then I think – if it made my life simpler why wouldn’t I want to pass this little tidbit on to my readers  – in hopes that maybe this little thing might make your life simpler too.

So all that being said, you know that last month I declared war on the crap in my home.  And I got all hardcore and did a whole 31 days of decrapification.  And folks, let me just tell you, it was freeing!  I know – it’s like, girl settle down  – but really it felt like removing a huge ton of bricks off of my back getting rid of all the junk around here – truly. it did.  I took it day by day.  Some days it was a whole closet.  Other days it was just one little, tiny cabinet.

During my quest to decrapify, yes – it was a quest – it may not have been Lord of the Rings epic, but it was a quest none the less, I got rid of all my old cookbooks.  Paleo life has been good  – really good – for me and my family.  And I don’t ever plan to go back to my old eating habits.  So, I grabbed a box and loaded it up with the old cookbooks and said goodbye forever to my old way of eating.  Now, I realize that I could have kept those old books and made tweaks to the recipes, but for me it was more about letting go and really moving forward – does that make sense?

Once the old books were gone, I sat down with the new books I’ve acquired over this last year and decided to give them a happy makeover.  (Against all Grain is one of my favorites!!!!  Follow her blog here.)

This is the aforementioned not-blog-worthy “project”.

Organizing a Cookbook with Tabs

I swear using my hAppy to make tabs for the favorites was the best idea I’ve come up with in a long time.

Cookbook tabs

cookbook tabs with Zink hAppy

Especially at this time of year when I’m planning holiday menus and really hustling in the kitchen.  Having the tabs means not having to take the 5 to 10 extra minutes to look up the page number in the index, and we all know how precious those 5 to 10 minutes can be at this time of year.

It’s such a simple little thing – adding tabs to your favorite recipes – but it really does make life a little simpler – just a little easier  – so I thought I’d share.   Even if you don’t have a Zink hAppy you could use all sorts of things to make tabs  – washi tape, post it notes – or you can also buy stick on tabs at your local office supply store.

Have you done any little projects that have made your life simpler recently?  Sometimes it’s the smallest thing that can make the biggest difference!

Happy Weekend friends!

  • I love this idea! Hubby and I are always trying to remember which book and where certain recipes are. This work be a great way to mark our favorites in each as well. I went through a lot of our cookbooks as well this past year. And, now that we are gluten free around here I find myself going to only a few. And yes, while I could easily adapt most…I still find myself going to my newer books.
