painting the back of the cabinets black

One other recent change I’ve made in the kitchen, besides the 5 minute cabinet switcharoo that I yammered on about yesterday, is painting the back of the glass fronted cabinets black.

Our Fifth House - Kitchen - painted black cabinet backs
It took me less than 2 hours to apply two coats of black paint (that I already had on hand – Valspar Cooled Lava) to the back of all the glass fronted cabinets in our kitchen.   The white dishes on display really pop against the black background.  I’m wondering now why I didn’t do this sooner.

It’s always nice when you can create a new look in your home with little effort and without spending a dime!  You can see how these cabinets looked before in this old kitchen tour.  I am continually amazed at the power of paint.

  • making the white dishes pop! is great but I really noticed {love} how it relates / connects to the black countertops … and the black door knobs in the middle is like a dotted line connecting the two larger black elements. Nice!

  • Love it Carmel! The white pottery really does pop now. I transformed an old PB dresser we had for our foyer using my new favorite shade from BM, Beach Glass. Now I am looking for some more victims!!

  • I love how black paint can make such a difference. People are always afraid to use it, but it is so elegant. Great idea to use it.

  • I am obsessed with your kitchen!! I love the idea of painting the backs of the glass cabinets black so that the white pops! Beautiful.
