teacher gift idea: a fun thyme in a mason jar

chevron painted jar - teacher gift idea
Hey friends!  I’m back today with another Krylon spray paint challenge.  (You can see the last one here.)  This color palette is really different than the last one, and for an added challenge I pushed myself to use all 4 paints on one item………because silly challenges like this make me giddy.  #itsthelittlethings

Rich Plum (colormaster), Jasper (natural stone), Blue (shimmer metallic), Bright Idea (colormaster)
Since the end of the school year is right around the corner I used this challenge to knock out yet another teacher gift.  I kind of live by the motto – “put it in a mason jar” as evidenced here and here.  What is it about a mason jar that just makes everything from flowers and plants to candy and desserts just look so much cuter, chic-er and fabulous-er?!  These large glass Kerr jars can be found at Michael’s.  They’re a little larger than a standard mason jar, and I love them for gift giving.

I started by spraying the entire outside of the jar with the natural stone spray paint in jasper.  I really love this textured spray paint. like a lot.  Then I used some chevron frog tape and carefully spray painted each section a different color.

It was a pretty easy process but somewhat time consuming because I had to wait until each section was completely dry before moving on to the next.  Once I was done with the painting, I removed the tape and used a fine grit sandpaper to scuff it up a little.  I wanted to give it a bit of a distressed look to really let the stone texture underneath the other colors shine through.  (And the distressing also helps to camouflage any bleed through.)

I filled the jar with some rocks for drainage and then planted some thyme.  I finished it off with a wooden garden marker (Michael’s) that I spray painted in rich plum then used chalkboard paint on the front to write a punny little message.
have a fun "thyme" this summer - teacher gift idea
My kids have had some really awesome teachers this year, and they all deserve to be thanked for their time in the classroom.

These challenges just reaffirmed my love for spray paint!  And have also got me head over heels in love with the natural stone paints.  Seriously, nothing is safe!  Have you all tried them?

  • Love it Carmel. We used to do classroom pots with the kids thumbprints (that were then turned into bugs of different kinds). We would then fill the pots with impatients and a packet of thyme. The rim of the pot said, "thank you for your thyme and patience".
