gift idea: summer party in a bucket

I think whether you’re designing a room, putting an outfit together or planning a party starting with a color palette can be the perfect jumping off point.  Whether you’re playing with neutrals or bright colors, a color palette can really get your creative juices flowing.

In fact, that’s exactly how this project went down.  It all started with an inspiring color palette.  I was a part of a group of bloggers challenged by Krylon to create something with these colors.

First off, as you all know, I love me some spray paint!  My initial thought with this color palette was that these colors looked like a fun summer party – bright, cheerful and happy!  Inspired by this crazy fun palette of colors, I decided to create a “party in a bucket” to give as a gift to my girl’s teacher.  What better way to end the school year than with a party?!
I started by giving some blue mason jars (find them at Michael’s) a little color splash.  I used some packing tape around the top and then sprayed each one with a different color to create a dipped look.

I wasn’t too careful about my tape lines.  I just sort of slapped it on; and then once the paint was dry I ripped it off, sanded them with a fine grit sandpaper and called them done.

These jars are perfect for utensils on a party buffet.  (The chalkboard clips and pinwheels were found at Michael’s. )  Since I only spray painted the outside they can be used as vases or to serve drink garnishes  – lots of options with these colorful cuties!  The shimmer metallic green paint is such a pretty combination with the blue mason jar.  It looks a lot like sea glass; I love it!
Next I grabbed some glass candlesticks (the Dollar Store) and spray painted them with the natural stone textured spray paint in limestone.  Then I glued some plastic bowls (Party City) to the top to create these fun serving pieces that are perfect for outdoor entertaining.

The textured spray paint is so cool!  This was my first time using it, and I was really impressed with the results.  It made the glass candlesticks that I turned into pedestals look a lot less fragile – perfect for  entertaining outside!  The limestone color reminds me of white sand beaches and has me dreaming of summer vacation.

These items can be used for outdoor entertaining all summer long, but they would also be great for organizing a teacher’s desk top.  I could easily see these items filled with pens, pencils, erasers, paper clips, etc – so perfect for a teacher!  I put these items along with a few other things I found at Michael’s in a beverage tub (Target).
