I think blogs, magazines and television shows about interior design tend to skim over the process. Often it seems like someone waved a magic wand and within minutes a space was completely pulled together and beautiful. It’s easy to look at a time lapse video that may cover a long period of time and focus on the before and after, and then turn around and look at your own space and wish you could create that magic for yourself.
The thing is decorating/designing takes time. Creating a home you love to live in isn’t going to happen over night……………..and that’s okay. There’s so much joy in the process when you stop fretting over getting to the after and you start enjoying where you are right now.
It’s taken me years to pull this little hallway in my home together. It’s finally in a semi-finished looking state after lots of changes and little tweaks. Who knew a tiny hallway could take so long to decorate?! In the spirit of enjoying the decorating journey I thought a little walk down memory lane would be fun.
Here’s where we are now.
This is where we started.
Back in 2011, yes 2011, I blogged about wanting to do something with this small hallway. (This was back in my point and shoot camera days.) It took me a good long while to decide what I wanted to do and then it took me even longer to actually execute my plan.
In 2012, I blogged about how this hallway had become what my hub was not-so-lovingly referring to as “abstract art”. Y’all, I hosted many gatherings in my home with this wall looking like this……..I’m not even kidding!
Painting those stripes just about killed me…………….this was by far the most difficult diy I’ve ever done.
Once the stripes were finally done, I found a mirror at HomeGoods to use as a focal point to add a little depth and interest.
But the black color never really felt quite right for me, so I eventually busted out the gold spray paint. Who’s surprised?! I also decided to do some furniture rearranging and brought in a small console table.
With this hallway leading to the powder room which has zero storage, I decided to add a skirt to this table so that I could secretly store bathroom essentials like extra toilet paper and cleaning supplies.
And then it sat like that for months while I auditioned a bunch of different vignettes until I finally found one I liked well enough to photograph for the blog. π
This one hallway has literally taken me years to pull together. And it’s still not done…………….
I’ve stopped trying to get to the after because the journey is more fun than reaching the destination.
So pretty Carmel. It is such a process and as much as I love to see a room made over, I love to see that process just as much π xoxo
