hairpin desk – look for less

Little girlfriend really, really wants a desk in her room.  And it’s not because her brother has one…..so she says.  ðŸ˜‰  She’s an artsy type that loves to draw, and she wants her own creative space where she can also do homework.  Her room is on the small side and is already pretty filled furniture wise with her great grandmother’s hand-me-down bed, dresser and nightstand.  So I’ve been looking for a small desk that won’t take up too much visual space.  Also being that her furniture is on the traditional side I’m leaning toward something a bit more modern looking.

Here’s a peek at what we’re starting with in her room.  In case you can’t tell, this room already totally matches her spunky personality.

I’ve long loved the look of a hairpin desk, and I think this simple look would be perfect in her room.

So I all was all ready to snag this desk from World Market while it’s currently on sale for 25% off………

until I found this one at Walmart for $60!

The dimensions are almost identical; and I kind of love the teal legs, although I could always spray paint them a different color.  The Walmart desk actually comes in 2 other color ways, and I’m considering the oak and grey combo but that color is currently out of stock.  So I need to make a decision at some point, but I can hardly believe this desk at Walmart sells for less than half the price of the World Market version?!  Plus, free shipping!  Crazy town!
I like the idea of pairing this desk with a louis style chair like this one
I’m envisioning something like this.  I think having a mirror over the desk will not only brighten her one window space, but it will also make her desk dual function as a vanity.  Which will be great as she’s getting older, since she has to share a bathroom with her brother.

I’m telling you all, from now on, before I buy anything I’m going to check Walmart online first.  I’m so impressed with all the great stuff they sell via their website, and I’m over here scratching my head as to why they don’t sell more of this great stuff in stores?  Have any of y’all ever seen this desk in a store?  They also sell a hairpin coffee table and tv stand, both of which look pretty great for the price.
Have a Happy Halloween weekend!   My kids are so pumped!  I’m off to run a Harry Potter photo booth at my girl’s school today – happy Friday friends!

  • Walmart can undercut anyone's prices because of a variety of unethical practices. Do a little digging on their employee wages and benefits, how they treat their suppliers, and overall corporate strategy. That desk might come at a great price for you, but who's ultimately paying?

  • It took me a minute to realize your daughter was in that picture – she went all camouflage on me! Love the desk (and the chair – awesome!). Can't wait to see what you put together.

  • I've always wondered if these large corporations just make for larger targets or if indeed their practices are drastically different from most other retailers. I also have to wonder who suffers most if Walmart goes under? They employ 1% of the United State's workforce. Unethical business practices are not okay, but I'm not positive that boycotting solves the problem. I think you can affect change with your dollars for sure, that's why I buy mostly organic/pastured/free range food but when it comes to design items I don't know that paying a higher price at another retailer necessarily solves anything or sends the right message. Thanks for your opinion. It's definitely food for thought.

  • Walmart has been rocking the price wars lately. This week I ordered a Nourison rug 8×10 for $366…the same rug was at Home Depot for $499 and Birch Lane for $599! Add free delivery to that…and it's a win for my decorating budget. 🙂

From now on, I'll check Walmart for all my decorating purchases.

  • I love the clean look of the hairpin desk, especially with as much stuff as is already in my daughters room, but she is a creative also and love to draw and weave and make stuff. And when you like you make stuff you have a lot of supplies and papers……how do you (neatly) contain all of that with no desk drawers? I've had a hard time finding a traditional desk with drawers at a reasonable price. Modern desks don't have drawers or they're more designed for computers and a lot of the old desks at thrift stores have drawers that are more narrow than a piece of paper so they won't lay flat.

  • I agree with you, Carmel. We don't have a large variety of stores where I live (Canada/Vancouver Island/mid-Island). No Target anymore, they had too much overpriced, cheap things no-one wanted. I am a creative, handy person too, what I want I make (or upcycle). If I can't, only then I start looking too buy.
So, I learned first to look at Walmart. Actually, I can't afford not buying at Walmart. And most of their employees are working there for a very long time, after shopping at Walmart for more than a decade you get to know some of them, and, let me tell you, most of them are quite happy and always in a good mood if you ask them for help. What I would never buy at Walmart: meat and meat products, eggs, with their own brand name. Never.Ever. But everything else, brand names you can get everywhere, just more expensive? Why not. As mentioned: I can't afford not buying at Walmart.
