inspired design – black bookcases

Thank you all so much for the kind comments on my pink door.  I’m such a color lover, and it’s always so much fun seeing the impact that paint can make on a space.  I’m all ready to start my next painting project, and this time I’m going after the built-in bookcases in our living room.

sofapillow
The velvet sofa I ordered online arrived (I’ll share more on that soon), and it’s inspired me to get to work on our living room.  Mainly because all I want to do now that this sofa has arrived is sit here with coffee or wine in hand (depending on the time of day, of course), flip through decor magazines while watching back to back episodes of Project Runway.  All that sitting and loafing in this room is kind of giving me the hives as this room is still so, so, so far from the finish line.  Seriously, it’s like 10 paces back from the start line.  #notkidding #thejoysofmoving
So, I’m ready to get my booty in gear and tackle my next painting project!  New construction homes often lack the charm and character of older homes.  I’m grateful this house has built-in bookcases on either side of the fireplace mantel, but they kind of get lost on the wall.  And since I finally caved on the  ol’ TV over the fireplace tug-of-war (there’s no where else to put it and have it make any kind of sense –  I cave, hubs wins), I’m planning to go black.  Check out all this yummy inspiration below.
inspired design - black bookcases - design by Jenny @ Little Green Notebook
I’ve had a major design crush on Jenny from Little Green Notebook, for like ever.  I just love her bold use of color and pattern.  She mixes styles so flawlessly, and this space above is definitely lighting my design fire.
Black just makes everything come to life in such a beautiful way.

I think the black will not only make the bookcases more of a focal point in the room, but it will also help to disguise the black TV over the mantel.

  • Ha! It's definitely a love or hate kind of thing – there's no middle ground with black I think. That's what I love about design – everyone has their own style. I really love the drama it adds, and most everything else will be pretty light and bright plus I'm planning something for the bookcase backs to break up all the black.

  • Carmel, I LOVE the black! I live in a 1926 farmhouse and painted all my interior doors black. That has been the most dramatic change I've ever seen take place in my many years of home renovation projects. I used Black Onyx in Satin finish from Walmart and it is perfect! I know yours will be gorgeous!!

  • I like it as a change from all the white bookcases that have been so trendy. I just painted the walls in my bedroom black and when I told people I was doing it, they thought I was crazy. It's a large space with tons of natural light and tall ceilings so I knew I could get away with it. With my chunky white trim and fabric cream colored headboard and gold accents, I LOVE it. I am all for the black bookcases!

  • Loving your new blog design and really love those lights on the Clements Design picture. I just saw those on Thrifty Decor Chick and decided I need to have some. Not that I have built ins….

  • Sometimes I click on profiles to see who hates your design. But, they are hidden. Odd. I love almost every single thing you've done, in every house. And I should know…
A White House, with neutral colors, neutral carpets, and a soft door doesn't offend anyone. But remember, it doesn't inspire anyone either.

  • Totally love it Carmel. Dramatic and gorgeous! It's kind of like the black interior doors that I have, I know they're not for everyone, but they make my house different than the 10 others on the street that are similar in design and I'm so happy I took the plunge. I love your fearlessness in design!

  • Recommend navy. Still adds drama, still mostly neutral, and doesn't make the items displayed look like they are being sucked down a black hole. Plus, brass hardware would pop with class. Just my two cents. Do what makes you happy; I'm sure it'll be fabulous!

  • Carmel, I used to clean fabulous HUGE homes in the San Juan Islands, and let me tell you, the dramatic dark colors are beautiful if you have someone else clean them! haha! They show off your books and art, but also show every speck of dust! The best color I've had to take care of was a dark stormy slate blue…dark, dramatic, but not so unforgiving in between cleans. Just an FYI !!!

  • I love this idea and am also working on re-doing a home! Wondering what color your baseboards are and if you're planning on painting them also?
