The other simple change I made to the living room besides restyling the bookcases was to change up the pillow story. Pillows allow you to play with pattern, texture and color with zero real commitment in a space. It’s an inexpensive way to freshen a room, and one way you can really bring in a mega dose of personality.
Again inspired by the color palette of the little canvas painting I recently added, I pulled in a few touches of dusty pink. Pulling color palette inspiration from favorite art pieces is a great way to see how colors play with and off of each other to create a mix that feels cohesive. Black and white is never a bad idea, and of course, leopard is a neutral.
(pink (great velvet for the price!), gold, red ikat (on sale!), stripe (similar), leopard (similar), black and white ikat (similar)
Lately I’ve been digging color palettes that are a bit out of the box, pairing deeply saturated colors with softer hues. It feels fresh and exciting……but again, because we’re just talking about pillows there’s no real color or pattern commitment. Little commitment, little effort and little expense delivers big on the design play and makes it a whole lot easier to experiment with colors and patterns you may be too afraid to use to paint a wall or reupholster a chair.
A fresh pillow mix can give a room a whole new feel and is a great way to try different color schemes and pattern mixes. Even with dark sofas there is lots of room for pillow play. Don’t be fooled into thinking you have to have a neutral color sofa or white walls in order to pull off a fresh color palette. Just have some fun with it, that’s what it’s all about after all.
*And little tip – always use good pillow inserts! They make a world of difference in how your pillows look. I buy these (only when they’re on sale which they are right now!).
Loving these!

Carmel, A quick question….where/how do you store your pillows when they are not in use…while you are using other pillows!? I’m looking for storage ideas for those things that take up space when the look of the room is being changed! I’m just curious!
