Well friends today is week 6 of the One Room Challenge! And I’m supposed to be sharing a big reveal of the completely made over jack-and-jill bathroom I finished for my girl and our guests. But how can I share a reveal if she’s not done yet?! #wompwomp It was a bit lofty of me to think I could get this done in less than 6 weeks……..along with the FrogTape Paintover Challenge, our spring break trip to Italy and all the other things pulling me in different directions right now. Seriously, what was I thinking?!
That being said, I am leaps and bounds farther along than I ever would have been had I not taken on the One Room Challenge. And I’m happy to report my FrogTape Paintover Challenge makeover is complete!! I’ll be sharing the reveal of our freshly made-over laundry/mudroom next Tuesday! Plus I’m so close to crossing the finish line on both the guest bedroom and the girl’s/guest bathroom. So over the next few weeks here on the blog I’ll have three “room reveals” to share! The good thing about biting off more than you can chew is that eventually you do get through it all!
So today instead of sharing a bathroom makeover, I’m giving you another glimpse of the guest bedroom, which you may remember was my first attempt at the One Room Challenge last fall. No judgments please that she’s months past her official due date. 😉
A Nightstand, Desk & Vanity
Our guest bedroom is a decent sized room. However since our guests share a bathroom with my daughter I wanted to create a vanity space in the bedroom. Back in our Kentucky home I created a vanity space within the guest room closet which worked really well since we never used that closet for anything. But in this house we use the guest room closet to store our luggage, so copying that idea here wasn’t really going to work.
Enter a desk that doubles as a nightstand and moonlights as a vanity thanks to a simple leaning mirror.
The lucite chair keeps the space from feeling too heavy next to the bed. And using a writing desk as opposed to an actual vanity means there’s plenty of surface space for charging devices or laying out jewelry and personal care products.
It’s always important to me that a room design not only looks great but functions well. Putting this space together I tried to think from a guest’s perspective. When I’m traveling I’m always grateful for open surfaces where I can spread out my things instead of having to live out of my suitcase.
Desk/Vanity Details
I left the desk pretty bare and just brought in a few accessories. This painting was done by talented momma. It’s a favorite of mine.
The red notebook has a little message to our guests as well as the wifi information written inside. We also use it as a sort of guest room sign-in book. I think it’s fun to have guests leave us a little note when they stay, kind of like at a wedding. It serves as a fun little written memory book.
Since most of our guests come to visit us from other states I picked up this Charleston field guide, which I’ve really enjoyed going through myself. It has all kinds of information about the area from the history to the culture of the lowcountry.
I also stock the desk with postcards. While I don’t do turn down service or breakfast in bed, I am an advocate for sending snail mail! 😉
I can’t wait to share the full room! I’m so glad that after almost 2 years of living here, and hosting countless guests, we finally have a pulled together space for them to use while they’re visiting. I really love having overnight guests!
