It’s not really a “playroom”. It’s more of a family hang out space. This is where we watch movies together as a family and play board games. Word on the street is that Santa is bringing this room a pool table this Christmas. Last Christmas we had only been in this house for about 5 months before the hustle and bustle of the holidays hit. I went from unpacking moving boxes to unpacking holiday decor. With big plans to decorate the playroom with a tree filled with family keepsakes and handmade ornaments, I unfortunately ran out of time. So this year, thanks to a kick in the pants from Lowe’s Home Improvement, I moved decking the halls of the playroom up on my holiday decorating priority list. And everyone in the family is really happy that I did!
Welcome to our Holiday Family Hang-Out Space!
Let’s face it calling it a playroom just rolls off the tongue so much easier. 😉
Since this is a casual space where we play video games and have UNO and Apples to Apples marathons, I wanted our Christmas decor to have a youthful vibe. It’s a little bit retro and a whole lot of fun! I’m especially loving this red, turquoise, orange and yellow color combination mixed with plaid!
Outside of the holiday decor, this casual living space has a vintage meets modern look with the tufted grey sectional, light blue bookcases (found at Ikea) and vintage board games. Playing off of those elements I brought in these retro style colored lights. These lights stay cool to the touch unlike the ones from my youth.
This little tree is decorated with ornaments we’ve collected over the years. Some remind us of family vacations, some were handmade by the kids and there are even a few on here that the hubs and I made when we were tiny tots. I love family trees like this! Trees that are decorated with memories and a hodge podge of sweet mementos are just so special!
The sweet little foxes and hedgehogs add to the playful vibe, and the plaid ribbon and tree skirt help to unify the overall look. The modern star tree topper is the cherry on top of our fun family tree.
I grabbed some paper mache letters from the craft store and combined them with this cute red felt wreath to add a little joy to the window area. Pun intended. 😉 I just used some command strips to attach them to the moulding on the window. Simple Christmas decorating ideas that are easy to execute are totally my jam.
As I’ve mentioned before my holiday decorating mantra is “keep it simple”. I think a little goes a long, and it sure is easy to clean up when the season is over. 😉
These retro lights make me so happy! They bring back fond memories of childhood Christmases past.
