Fresh Start – Fresh Bedding

As mentioned earlier this week one of my house goals this year is to finally get my master bedroom in order!  For whatever reason I’ve had trouble sticking to do a design plan in this space.  The ceiling is high and the room is pretty large, and I’ve struggled with how to really utilize the size and height whilst creating a comforting, cozy place to land at the end of the day.  After a year of waffling, I think I’ve finally decided on a plan that feels right, and I’m excited to see it come together!  As usual with a bedroom design, I always start with the bed.  We’ve had our four poster bed for over 12 years now. While it’s far from “trendy” it’s a classic look I’ve yet to tire of, though bedding helps to give it more of a modern look.  It’s so nice to start this bedroom design with fresh bedding!

Black, White & Blush

My color crush on blush is still going strong.  This space is going to be heavy on the neutrals, with a good dose of black and white, lots of pattern and texture and just a few pops of blush…..seeing as how this is the Mister’s space as well.  😉  The good thing for me is he’s not afraid of a little pink.  Adding in some more masculine elements like the black and gold reading lamps and the black ceiling, I intend to do at some point, help to counterbalance the femininity.

This simple, classic duvet cover from Crane & Canopy really sets the tone for the design plan.  I love the contrast of the black border!  What’s nice about white bedding is that it leaves room for color changes.  If/when I tire of blush it’ll be easy to make a change.

The mongolian pillows add a touch of color and texture.  They bring in a warm, modern vibe.  I found the black leather lumbar at HomeGoods.  It adds a little edgy-ness to the mostly casual, classic look.   Oh, and I refuse to take down this little wreath, the last bit of holiday decor still up in my home.  It just may stay up all year.  Miniature boxwood wreaths are my favorite!

Design Plans and Progress

The room is one large rectangle, so I’m planning to create a small sitting area on the other end.  It’ll be nice to have a spot to sit and read, or more likely fold laundry. #momlife

It took me over a year to source night stands.  No lie, I lived with a cardboard box as a night stand in here for a solid 18 months!   Our bed is really high off the ground, and I knew I wanted something with drawers for extra storage.  Patience in design can be really hard, but taking the time to find exactly what you want and saving up for the right pieces is always so rewarding.  I’m in love with these beauties I found at a local store, Celadon.  While I love the look of mixed wood tones, I’m considering painting the bed a glossy black.  Thoughts?

So here’s where I am at this point.  Making a little progress at the end of 2016 has motivated me to push forward!  I switched out the ceiling fan for this basket pendant, also from Celadon.  Plans in the works call for painting the walls, I’m thinking of going white.  I’ll also be painting the ceiling black, bringing in curtain panels, a bench for the foot of the bed, smallish coffee table for the sitting area, art and accessories…….I’m so ready after living in this house for a year and a half to have a cozy space for us to end our day!

  • Great idea to paint the bed glossy black. Will really give the traditional style a modern edge. LOVE Celadon. We’re from Boston but vacation on IOP every April and Celadon usually ends up as a stop as we putter about the area. I vicariously live out my fantasy of moving to Charleston through your blog!

  • love it! emmy had that bedding in her old bedroom and we loved it! and we paired it with blush! 🙂 love the new light fixture, too, but i can’t live without my ceiling fan…. i just can’t.
excited to see where this all ends up!

  • I think some euro shams would look good. In my opinion, the pillows are too “flat”, if that makes sense. I think they need to “stand up” more against the headboard. But that’s just what I like, you may disagree. I think the bed would look great painted black. Love the nightstands. I’d like to see some kind of patterned throw at the end of the bed – it would be great if you found something with black and blush. Probably hard to find, but how good would that look??!! A piece of art for the room might be a nice addition too. You’re off to a great start!

  • I love the look of the wood bed posts with the black and white bedding. I wouldn’t paint them:) but I’m sure whatever you decide it will be beautiful! Love the clean look, yet still comfortable and liveable!

  • This design is beautiful Carmel! FYI there’s a similar version of that tufted bench at Grandin Road, but with nailhead trim and half the cost!

  • Beautiful. Do you have a chest or dresser in the Master? I am desperately looking for one! Been living out of the laundry basket, longer than you lived with the cardboard boxes!!?
Would love to see the “other side” of the bedroom and your plans there. Thanks!

  • Yes, the other side of the room is pretty boring right now, but we do have a dresser and armoir. I’ll share more pics and plans soon!

  • I have to layer pillows on in stages so as not to “poke the bear”…..haha! My hub gets all crazy when there are too many pillows on the bed. And yes, on the hunt for a great throw/blanket for the foot of the bed!

  • I love it! It’s so fresh and clean looking but still interesting with the contrasting border. Crane & Canopy has the best duvets!
And I can’t sleep in a room with a ceiling fan on. I had a bad experience involving a ceiling fan, a moth and my ear when I was a kid…..let’s just say it was terrorizing and I ended up in the ER. Ever since then I’ve been anti-fan. Haha! I’d rather sleep naked if I need to cool off at night – uh, was that TMI? 😉

  • In the spring and summer Celadon does a flee market type sale at the warehouse which is a little bit of a drive from IOP but definitely worth it – you should check it out some time when you’re visiting. I think they do it on Saturdays and Sundays. It’s fun – usually a couple of food trucks and some other cool local vendors set up a booth.

  • A black ceiling might look juvenile as if you were going to add those self-stick plastic constellations for a planetarium look. Go with a light color if you want but not black. The room is elegant and lovely. I don’t think black would add to the decor.

  • Love, love your blush Mongolian pillows!! I’ve been on a kick lately with pillows. Want to make , buy, fashion any I see. (NOT THAT I need any), but they’re really hard to resist. Your ceiling light, chair, and area rug give lovely texture to your room.

  • The great thing about paint is that it’s just that – paint, an easy mistake to fix. 😉 I’ve always loved a dark ceiling, especially in rooms with crown moulding and lots of light!

  • If you painted the wall behind the bed a dark color, such as black, the bed would really pop. I know your previous room was dark, but “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
It will be fun to watch your space evolve.

  • Hello Carmel, I have a very deep tray ceiling in my bedroom. I was thinking of painting it a dark color in my very bright bedroom. My bedroom is a rectangle shape and I believe I have enough room for a small sitting area too, can’t wait to see what you do. BTW, I love your bed! Thanks.

  • I myself have a four poster bed painted glossy black and love it. When you asked, I considered it for a few seconds, then pretty strongly felt that you should keep your bed as is. Right now you have a nice blend of the black, white, and blush thing going on. Painting the bed black might tip the scales too much to a sleek Parisian contemporary look and take too much attention away from the soft blush. Especially if you’ll be painting the ceiling black, it will be important to keep ALL the warm woods you have going on.
