This October we’ll have lived in our seventh house for three years, and I’m still slowly and methodically tweaking spaces and making this house feel like a home. It’s a journey for sure, and it’s one that I love. Our main bedroom has been through quite the evolution since move-in day and since I just scored an amazing framed vintage screen to hang over our bed, I thought it would be fun to take a little walk down memory lane.

Where it all started. I very clearly remember my architect and builder telling me that I would regret the small size of our bedroom. But almost three years later, I have zero regrets! The footprint is on the smaller size for new builds, this is true. But we have large his and hers closets, and with the ceiling vaulted and lots of windows, the space feels anything but small.

Move-in day. I’m not one to buy new furniture until I’ve lived in a house for at least a few months. I’m just big on letting the house and the way we live in it speak to me. So in our bedroom, we moved in with what we already had.

And since this four-poster bed was with us before our first baby was born and was one of our first grown-up purchases as a married couple, rather than ditching it for something new, I decided to give it fresh life with black paint.

And once the bed was paited black, I was inpsired to create the color and pattern story for the space.

I opted to highlight the height of the ceiling and really make the beams a focal point. And I really love the drama and texture the black grasscloth wallpaper added to the room. The dark ceiling made the room feel even taller.

Then I caved and finally let me husband put a tv in our bedroom, and I disguised our Frame TV in a gallery wall.

After I finally dressed the windows, I paused working on our bedroom to add molding to the walls of the ensuite hallway.

And with the hallway project done, I’m now back to styling our bedroom. Adding styling details is always the last step for me when I’m working on a space, and it’s most definiltey my favorite part of the design process. This is where I like to really take my time. It’s when my focus sort of shifts, and I start to think more in terms of curating/collecting as opposed to “decorating”. So when I stumbled across this acrylic framed screen that had been on my bedroom wishlist for awhile I just about fell over.

It’s absolutely stunning, and I basically stole it from a local thrift mall at $225. The acrylic frame alone is worth that price!

And the pleated lampshades I recently picked up at a local design shop, Fritz Porter, were exactly what I’ve been on the hunt for since I first brought these lamps into the room. I love the combination of this classic pleated shade with this sleek, contemporary base!

So now, after almost 2 1/2 years, our bedroom is nearly “done”. 😉 There are just a few key items I’m still hunting for at the moment……but it’s the thrill of the hunt that I love the most, so I’m in no hurry!
How would you describe your decorating process? Steady and slow or would you rather get it done quickly and be done thinking about it? I don’t think there’s a right or wrong way to go about making your spaces your own. But I hope for any other slow simmer kind of decorators that this post makes you feel seen. In a world of Instagram reels and makeover television shows that make design look like it happens faster than you can microwave popcorn, I hope seeing that I’m 2 1/2 years into creating this space and it’s still not “done” is comforting.
Whatever your design/decorating journey looks like, it’s all good. Just be sure to enjoy it! That’s what it’s all about afterall.

I absolutely agree with .you. What do people do in the principle bedroom that requires somuch room? Iwould rather put the square footage into w/I. Closets, ensuites, etc because thats were you need the space!
Most people get out of bed get readY and dont seethat room till just about bedtime!
