I Didn’t Know What I Didn’t Know

As a self proclaimed cosmetics junkie, I used to peruse the aisles of Sephora and Ulta with wild abandon……blissfully unaware I assumed all the products were safe to use, because well, this is America where we regulate everything.  Don’t we?

Unfortunately for us American consumers, personal care products is one of the least regulated industries.  What does this mean?  It means companies are allowed to use harmful ingredients and make their own judgments about safety.  With more than 80,000 chemicals on the market today, it means we as consumers have the burden of regulating our own safety when it comes to the products we use.

And so, I am now a card carrying lipstick hippie.  😉

Did You Know?

26 seconds

Not to freak you out or anything, but the truth is what you put ON your body is just as important as what you put IN your body. The products we use matter!  But who has time to research every ingredient listed on a bottle of moisturizer, body wash, sunscreen etc.?   It’s one thing to read food labels, but product labels too?  They can be so much tougher to dissect because NOT ALL CHEMICALS ARE TOXIC, and ingredient lists can be so long and hard to understand!  How can the average consumer distinguish the good from the bad?

There’s Actually an App for That!

Because, of course there is!  It’s 2017 for goodness sake.  Of course there’s an app for that.  Now if there was an app for folding laundry…….. but I digress.

The Environmental Working Group’s mission is to empower people to live healthier lives in a healthier environment. They’re a non-profit, non-partisan group that’s at the forefront of research and education.  Thankfully they’re doing the grunt work for us!  They’ve made making safe, healthy choices simpler by creating an app that puts the ingredient research in an easy to navigate database right at your fingertips.

EWG Healthy Living App

I mean seriously guys this app is so easy to use!  You can scan a barcode or type in the name.  There are ratings for more than 120,000 food and personal care products.  What I love is that it lists and rates each individual ingredient in a product.  Check your current product squad with the app and see how your daily product routine rates.  Just by using the app on a regular basis you’re teaching yourself more about which chemicals are toxic and why.  So you can decide for yourself and make more informed choices.

And It Gets Better

EWG is now offering a verification program for companies that are committed to consumer health and ingredient transparency.  The EWG VERIFIED mark on a product means that the product goes above and beyond its green rating in EWG’s healthy living app because the company has disclosed more about its formulations and manufacturing processes.  From a consumer standpoint it means that when you see that a product is EWG Verified you can trust that it’s safe to use.

Beautycounter is EWG Verified

I’m thrilled that Beautycounter products are EWG Verified.  After years of trying to find safer alternatives to my favorite beauty products, it’s nice to see I’ve finally found a company that is not only effective but completely safe!

  • Thanks for sharing about the app Carmel. I have used their website in the past. Good to know there’s a mobile version so we can check while out. I am a huge fan of the Beauty Counter products (thanks for the introduction), and can say they are just a “effective” as those laden with chemicals.

  • It is my goal this year to slowly transition to safe beauty products for myself and my teenage daughter. She likes all the things at Ulta too and before she leaves for college next year, I would like to educate her on better choices regarding skincare and makeup items.

  • Hi, Carmel. I’ve been curious if you found a problem with Acure products after posting about them a while ago. I made the switch on your recommendation and have been very happy with them, but felt a little disheartened or confused when you posted a new skin care routine shortly after without referencing the products you had just suggested. Have you found them to be unsafe or do you just prefer Beauty Counter?

I love your blog and your recommendations! Thanks for posting great content!

  • I’ve always loved that site but I didn’t know they has an app – thanks for the tip! 🙂 Just signed up for your newsletter as well!

  • This. Is. Everything. My daughter was diagnosed with central precocious puberty at 7 (!) and I’m convinced (and her doctor agrees) it’s largely because of all of the hormones/steroids/junk in our food supply and the crazy chemical in products we put in our bodies. Girls are hitting puberty younger and younger. CPP is serious business She’s now 8 and I’ve been on the hunt for products for my entire family that are safe and actually WORK! So looking forward to this. Thanks!

  • Have you tried Native deodorant? It is aluminium and paraben free and works like a dream. It is also made in the US and the scented ones smell great.

  • I have used the website to find info/ratings on household cleaners and detergents. Very interesting! I would be very interested to find safe fragrances covered in a newsletter.

  • So sorry to hear that about your daughter Angela! Beautycounter has a great line for kids. My kids use the shampoo and conditioner. My 12 year old son uses the charcoal bar soap on his face and it’s been wonderful for his pre-pubescent skin.

  • Hey Kelsey! All the Acure products I was using have a green rating from EWG, so they are safe to use. I discovered Beautycounter’s skincare line by accident after falling in love with their make-up products. Because I was so impressed with their makeup I decided to give their skincare products a try. Their charcoal cleansing bar and rejuvenating eye cream hooked me! Then I tried the charcoal mask and the nourishing cream exfoliator and I became a true fan! Although I do still think Acure’s argan oil is pretty awesome. I decided to become a BC consultant because this is a field I’m passionate about, and I love that BC is doing more than selling great products. They’re on the forefront of trying to effect change in the industry, which makes safer alternatives more accessible to all people.

  • Hi Carmen,
I am really interested in trying the Beauty Counter products. If I’m on a limited budget, I’m interested in what you would recommend? I’m turning 38 this week, I have oily t zone and dry skin on cheeks. I have autoimmune thyroid disease and celiac and most skin products cause a reaction. Puffy eyes, break outs etc. I keep trying retinol products from Neutrogena and have to throw it out due to reactions. I’m interested in evening out my skin tone (I have sunspots) and just settling into a simple skin care routine that will help my skin since I don’t care much for makeup. I definitely would like something to care for my eye area as I’m getting bit older. Thoughts?

  • Hi Paige! I think you’ll love BC products. To even out skin tone, I’d recommend the nourishing cream exfoliator. It’s a gentle exfoliator – you could start by using it one or two days a week and work up to using it 3 to 4 times a week. The rejuvenating eye cream is awesome! A little goes a long way. I use it twice a day. Since budget is a concern I’d recommend Acure Organics Argan Oil as a moisturizer. It will work great in combination with BC’s products and help to spread your dollars. If you haven’t already joined my The Safer Beauty Tribe monthly newsletter, I’d recommend signing up now. In the January newsletter I discussed the dangers of using retinol products – it’s on BC’s never list.

Other products that are great for evening and brightening the skin are BC’s Radiance Boosting Serum and the Rosewater Mist. I know you said you don’t care to wear makeup but you might enjoy Dew Skin Tinted Moisturizer, it’s lightweight, feels great on, evens out the skin without looking like you have makeup on and has the added benefit of a sunscreen. I’m a huge fan of this product and use it every single day!

  • Hi Carmel, I recently subscribed to your newsletter, so please enter me into the drawing. I just downloaded the app- very interesting, though the couple of items (2 beauty, 2 food) I tried to enter had only 25% success in being recognized. I’ll do more homework & hope for better results as the app catalog grows. Thanks for sharing your research!
