In terms of progress in my home office since the last update, there really hasn’t been much. I’ve had a few more art pieces framed and am about ready to start putting the gallery wall together. I’ve not yet made up my mind on what color to paint the sideboard (who’s surprised? no one), so I’ve decided to put a pin in that decision. And I’m moving on to selecting an office chair.
The Perfect Chair
Using a dining table as a desk presents a bit of challenge when sourcing the perfect chair. I need something with some girth, for lack of a better word. Just your run of the mill office chair isn’t really going to get the job done. I searched high and low for many moons……dramatic much?…….hoping to find something vintage that I could have recovered. I wanted a high back chair, maybe a wing back, something wide and tall.
With no luck on the vintage, second-hand scene, and growing tired of the chair I currently have in use, I started looking new. A number of options arose, but I was leery of ordering anything I couldn’t sit in, touch & feel, see-in-person, before biting the bullet. So long story short, I landed on the Portsmouth Dining Arm Chair from Arhaus.
It fits the bill perfectly in terms of size; it’s super comfortable and my favorite part is you can truly customize this chair to fit your needs.
Endless Options
Upholstery options for this chair are seemingly endless. There are 4 different color nail heads from which to choose, and there are about 20 different wood stain options. I love having options! Options are awesome…….but they make design decisions somewhat tough. It’s like trying to order food at a restaurant that has a book for a menu……how does one decide when presenting with so many appetizing choices?! 😉
The great thing about having a store locally is that they allow you to check out fabric samples. And their samples are really large, so you really get a feel for what that fabric will look like in your space.
If you follow me on Instagram, I shared the fabrics I’m debating over in my story. Of all the options available I narrowed down the choices to three. I’m going with the brass nail head trim size 7.
And I think for the wood stain I’ll either go with the dark charcoal grey or the black.
Now, I just need to decide on an upholstery option.
In the store I was really drawn to this striped herringbone. The texture is so great. I also love that it would bring in a masculine vibe to a space that is fairly heavy on femininity. This sort of pin-striped herringbone juxtaposes nicely with the flirty curvaceous back.
That being said, when I first started putting my original design plan together I had a leopard print chair in mind. I think the gold leopard option could be really pretty paired with the light pink walls and other gold accents in the room. Although the grey is a nice choice that meshes well with the grey velvet chairs opposite the desk and the grey lamps on the sideboard.
Each option would bring a totally different look and vibe into the room. I just need to decide what story I want this room to tell.
Then maybe I’ll have some clarity on whether or not, or which color, to paint the sideboard. 😉 Ah design decisions…….the struggle is real.
Options 1, 2 or 3?
Other plans include hanging a mirror on the wall behind the desk, hopefully something vintage. And I also plan to paint the doors a very soft grey, Sherwin Williams Amazing Grey to balance the grey from the other side of the room and really frame the desk.
And as if just choosing one fabric option wasn’t enough of a challenge……..there is also an option on the table that would allow me to choose a different fabric for the front than the back……oh gracious!
All three are fun fabrics for the space, but I am loving option number one!
With your plans to paint the closet door grey, you will already have nice balance with the grey door on one side of the room and the grey chairs on the other side of the room, so I think option number 3 might be a little too much grey, and not provide the contrast that you love.
The brass nail heads are such a fun feature, and option 2 is not going to allow the brass nail heads to sing. I would lean away from something that will cause your nail heads to fade into the fabric.
Option 1 has such fun texture with the herringbone, and it will balance out the darker curtains on the opposite wall. Plus, the masculine pinstripe herringbone with the pink walls — the masculine and feminine contrast is to die for. Love your plans, as always!
