Before and After: Office Nook

I’m officially calling the Office Nook project “done”!  What that actually means remains to be determined, but regardless I’m excited to share the “after” with you all today!  You may recall earlier this year when I decided to turn the unused landing spot at the top of our stairs into an office for my work-from-home husband.

Before

The hubs had major doubts when I started this project, but all I could see was the potential here.

I just knew this little spot could be something really special.  It had contender written all over it.

My design plan called for floor to ceiling bookcases to be built around the door.  And I also planned to convert the recessed light to a pendant.  The goal was to make the space feel more like a room rather than a landing spot.  Style wise, I was going for a distinctly masculine feel with that mid-century modern look my husband loves so much.

After

I almost can’t believe it’s the same space!  Like wow, what a difference the bookcases made right?!  In any room with a small footprint working vertically is almost always your best play.  The built-in bookcases add architecture and height to this space making it feel grander in size without sacrificing on square footage.

My favorite part of any home project is always the styling, so I fully enjoyed playing around with accessories on these bookshelves.

I found this mid-century modern horse print at a local thrift shop.  I love that it ties his Lexington, KY roots to his favorite design style.  And I’m pretty sure I remember seeing this print in Pete’s office on Mad Men, so that gives it extra cool points right?  😉

Those of you that have been around for awhile may recognize the desk and chair from the hubs office in our last home.  They were both vintage finds on eBay.

Switching the recessed light out for a lantern was a simple way to make this space feel more like its own room.  This lantern is a larger version of the same lantern we have in our entry foyer, so as you’re walking through the house there is some good continuity happening.

I’m thrilled to have this space crossed off my house to-do list.  But mostly I’m just glad the hubs is happy with his new office!
