home office design plan

No, this picture wasn’t taken on move-in day last year.  It was taken just this morning.

This is the room to the right of our entry foyer.  It’s the very first room you see when you walk into the house.  The previous owners used this space as a formal living room.  Since we don’t have the need for another living space the hubs and I both agreed that we would make this room his home office since he works from some when he’s not traveling for business.  But after a year of living in this house we’ve both realized that this space just isn’t working for him to use as an office.

For one thing, this room has no doors so noise is a real issue.  Our home with two growing children has become a social spot for kids to hang out, which is great.  However since this space is right by the front door the constant opening and closing with kids coming and going is rather tough to deal with when the Mr. is on a conference call.  So to make a long story short, after much thought and discussion, the hubs and I have decided to move his work space up to the small loft/landing spot at the top of the stairs.  Which means, since the landing spot was supposed to be my office space, that I just gained some mega real estate in our home!

This empty room is now mine!  All mine!  I can hardly believe I get a whole room to use an office.  I’ve never had a room to design specifically for myself so this is an all new ball game for me, and it’s super fun and exciting!   With this room being right off the entry foyer (here’s a recent look in case you’ve forgotten what she looks like), I want the design of this space to flow, but I also want to inject my own personality and bring in a feminine touch.

entry to office plan

While I’ve got neutral walls, SW Shoji White, throughout our open concept kitchen-dining-living area, I’m going with a fun color on the walls in here, pink!  My plan is to reduce the paint by maybe 50 to 60% so that the walls are more blush than pink.  Then to keep things from feeling too sweet the ceiling will go dark, SW Urbane Bronze, which will be a nice tie in to the bookcases in the living room; and for more lighting and a masculine balance I’m replacing the lantern with this fixture from School House Electric that I’ve loved forever. I’m going geometric with the rug, again to balance the sweetness of the color palette, that will be layered on top of the natural fiber rug already in the space.  Then I’m bringing in a little glam with this red and gold campaign desk and these gorgeous grey velvet chairs.

I’m pretty pumped about the design plan for this space, but I am having trouble deciding on the curtain panels.  I definitely want a palm print.  I like the fun, casual vibe they add to the space, but I’m stumped on which color way I like best.

Should I go with…….

option 1:  Large Scale Banana Leaf Print on White

floral art, palm tree art

Option 2:  Fern leaf on Black

Or Option 3: Fern Leaf in Red

With two windows in the space and tall ceilings I’ll need 4 panels at 108 inches.  That’s a whole lot of fabric, so I’m trying to decide which one of these three options I like the best.  Which one do you like?

With this room being the first one you see when you walk through the front door, I’m hoping to get this plan into action very soon.    As of right now I’m sitting on the floor using the little chair you see in the picture up above as a desk, so hopefully the desk I ordered arrives sooner rather than later.  😉

  • Lucky you! What a great blank canvas for you to work with. I love the color scheme and the direction you’re heading. My initial curtain thought was the red fern, but then when I read how much fabric you were going to use and how visible the space is from so many areas, I think my vote is the banana leaf on white. I can’t wait to see the finished space! Happy waiting…

  • Option 1. I loved it before even seeing the other options. Your office is going to be beautiful. I can’t wait to see it unfold. The floral print is gorgeous.

  • I initially was going to say #2, but then remembered you were going dark on the ceiling with urbane bronze. I think it would be too dark with all that fabric. So I am going to say #1. I think it will allow your other great features to pop.

  • I like your first option. Just add paned pocket doors for noise reduction. Or frosted glass?

  • There’s not enough space to add pocket doors without doing a full construction job, but we thought about it. He’s pretty happy having a quieter space upstairs that is out of the way but that has access to the top front porch. He goes out there to sit and work quite a bit.

  • You always do an awesome job with your decorating and design!! But, I would definitely go with number 1 plan due to so much fabric needed! Red may be too bold!

  • Option 3 all the way…go big or go home! I’ve seen the green and white done on so.many.interiors but the red is a fabulous new twist plus it ties in with the red bench in the foyer and the red in the entry rug…plus I think of red and pink as your signature colors….:)

  • I love your plans! I definitely think #1 – banana leaf on white. Can’t wait to see it finished. Love love love the desk!

  • I think option #1 would be the best in the space. It would add some fun, but not be too dark or draw too much attention from the rest of the room.

  • Carmel this is such an exciting space to design! A room just for you!! I love the fun direction you’re going with it. I have the white banana leaf fabric in outdoor pillows and couldn’t love it more, I don’t know if I’ll ever get tired of it. Can’t wait to see your space come together!

  • I always love your design plans, they are so different and confident. You give me so many ideas!
If your new office space gets a lot of sunlight I would go with 2, the black background. However, if you don’t get that much sunlight, I think 1 with the white background. The last background with the red is just to much for me, however somehow I think that’s the one you will choose and will surprise us all! Hurry up, I can’t wait to see it!!!!

  • #1 for sure. The red is just too much and the black background is too dark with the darker ceiling color. Plus I like the more “natural” look of the first pic. Perfect for Charleston. I have a completely different style/design in my home so I enjoy seeing your choices! I know it will look great. After seeing all your pink accents I am dying to inject some pink in my house. Thanks for the inspiration!

  • #3…The red. it will tie into the rest of your home and bring the color green in with plants – pillows – art and etc. Love your style and vibe but I vote no (if I can) to your art option.

  • I think the first one will look too trendy. The second choice is spot on with putting a little black into the space…..it’s going to look great no matter what you choose!

  • I think the red fern will detract from the gorgeous desk. I would have said the black background until I remembered the bronze ceiling. So I vote with the rest that say option # 1. All three are great picks, just depends on what feature you want to be a focal point. Love your style!

  • This is exciting! I have loved that green leaf on white for a while now and think it looks brilliant in almost every setting I’ve seen it in. The red is interesting too and with your design skill you could make it work I’m sure. Great selection you have there. Looking forward to seeing it!

  • Since drapery is the item that you are unsure of, perhaps wait until you have painted the walls and ceiling and until the other items are placed. That might help you see what works best. Also two questions: what is behind the door across from the window; and will we get a tour of the new man-office?

  • It’s a closet. And yes, I’ll be sharing his work space sometime soon. Great suggestion on waiting to see how the elements come together!

  • Thanks! I’ve been loving that green on white palm leaf print for a long time too! This might be the only spot in the house where I could make it work.

  • Thanks Joan! Yes, I’m afraid the black background in #2 paired with the dark ceiling would be too much. I love dark colors but I don’t want my work space to feel like a cave.

  • The art is my favorite part. I guess it’s true what they say about beauty being in the eye of the beholder. 😉 Both prints really speak to me.

  • That’s exactly why I’m having trouble pulling the trigger on the palm print. But I also feel like if you really love a trend you should go with it even if it is really over done.

  • Thanks Ginger! I’m a huge red lover but I already have a LOT of red in my home which is why I’m leaning toward #1 as I feel like they’ll balance the red and inject a little bit of a casual vibe.

  • Ha! I love that! A red and pink combo is pretty much my favorite color mash up of them all…….outside of black and white, which aren’t really colors, right? 😉

  • Wow! I’m really drawn to #3 but I’m a person who needs to see paint and furniture in place sometimes before making a big decision! They are all awesome and bold choices! Can’t wait to see what you end up choosing!

  • Option 1 is my pick. It ties in your rug while allowing your pink walls to pop. Option 2 is overpoweringly dark and option 3 is too much red. The red desk is so perfect and has the right amount of punch – let it be the only red in the room
