One Room Challenge – Week 4 – Moulding Feature Wall

Today I’m back with a One Room Challenge update! But first a little backstory. You see, I’ve been wanting to install a moulding feature on the headboard wall in this bedroom basically since we moved in two years ago. This room is large and has a wall that has always seemed just perfect for a special wall treatment. I have a whole Pinterest board devoted to moulding and trim work ideas and inspiration. But time and my novice woodworking skills have kept me from making my pinspiration a reality. When I decided to finally pull my teenage son’s bedroom together for the 6 week One Room Challenge I thought there was just no way I could tackle this moulding wall idea and still finish the whole room on time. So once again, I decided to put this moulding project off to be tackled at a later date. I mentally put a pin it. 😉

But then! Oh but then, Linda at Calling it Home, the genius organizer who created this crazy, fun, exhausting design challenge decided to offer up a one week extension! Say what?! So I now have an extra week! And the crazy in me thinks that extra week will allow me the time needed to once and for all make this moulding wall a reality. Best laid plans right? Ha! Well, here I go!

The Beginning of a Moulding Feature Wall

So I’ve gotten started. Not going to lie, the math was the hardest part. Thank goodness my 13 year old son is a math whiz.

Funny story y’all 😉 – So my son and I were in Lowe’s grabbing all the supplies and I busted out my phone to use the calculator to just double check our numbers and make sure I was buying enough boards. Anyhow, I told my technologically advanced 13 year old son about how my 4th grade teacher Mrs. Bardwell was a fanatic about making sure all her students had their multiplication facts memorized. Like she would just randomly call on you in the middle of a history lesson and say – What’s 6 x 7? And if you didn’t answer quickly and correctly you had to write that fact down 5 times. I remember her so vividly saying, “You need to know these facts. What are the chances you’re going to have a calculator in the store with you?” And then I looked at my son, and laughed, and waved my smart phone with it’s handy dandy calculator on it and said in a sing-song-y voice – “Mrs. Bardwell I’m in a store, and I have a calculator!”.

He didn’t think it was as funny as I did. Because 13. But those of y’all who grew up in a time where email wasn’t a thing and only rich people had things like car phones will feel me on this right?

Anyhow, I’ll be back to share the tutorial for this moulding treatment next week when it’s *hopefully* all done. I’m making solid progress, so fingers crossed all goes smoothly.

Magazine Cut Outs For The Win

In other news, I took my son and daughter thrifting last week in hopes of having them help me source some art for the gallery wall. While our shopping day was hilarious it was not very fruitful. Thankfully sometimes things other than bills come in the mail like this car magazine that is printed on heavier paper. My son inherited his dad’s love of cars who inherited his dad’s love of cars. The car loving is in the Phillips’ men blood, and my boy has been going to car shows since he could walk. So long story short, I had my son flip through this magazine and pic out some images he likes that we’ll be framing to go in a gallery wall over the sofa. You can’t beat free art!
