I just recently painted my closet ceiling metallic gold, and I am so in love! This was such a fun little project!
Why Paint?
First, let me back up and give you a little play by play. Those of you following along on Instagram are well aware that a few months ago my husband had a mishap with the television in the upstairs game room, and well, to make a long story short, his foot came plunging through my closet ceiling. Good times. Anyhow, knowing full well that to fix this giant footprint sized hole I’d have to pull everything out of my closet because patching a ceiling is such a messy job, I opted to wait until summer break when I knew I would have time in my schedule to embark on a thorough closet clean-out.
Because I didn’t have the exact color match to the beige ceiling paint in my closet, I decided to repaint the entire ceiling. And while any old flat white paint would have worked just fine, I figured if I had to repaint the whole ceiling I may as well have a little fun. So I did a little poll on Instagram and asked if I should paint this ceiling black or red. And over 75% of people said I should go with black. But the more I got to thinking about it, neither black nor red really got me excited.
Then one day while I was still trying to make up mind, I stumbled across this metallic gold paint in Target, and it was love at first sight.
I just knew this was the right paint for this little job.
I LOVE gold!
This metallic gold is just so fun! It’s so hard to photograph, but it is really pretty in person! In a space that doesn’t receive any natural light it adds such a nice glow. I love how the gold picks up on some of the other gold accents in this closet, like the hooks on the pegboard jewelry organizer I made a few years ago.
And the metallic gold chair I use as a stepladder in here (that I spray painted with Rustoleum’s metallic gold many years ago).
This gold ceiling is a welcome change. I love special details like this in unexpected places! Closets really do make for great design playgrounds!
*Painting tip – Metallic paint is a little tricky to use on a ceiling. Use a metallic finish roller and overlap as you roll to avoid hard finishing lines from being noticeable.
Freshly Organized and Hole Free!
I have my husband to thank for this closet refresh! I have no doubt that this ceiling would probably still be a plain old boring beige if not for his clumsy foot. Sometimes you need a little push to jumpstart a project. 😉
And I may not have ever found this metallic gold paint if not for these black wooden hangers I just had to have. 😉
Oh and the light fixture in here, that so many of you have asked about on Instagram, is from Lowe’s Home Improvement. It’s hard to photograph it with zero natural light in here, but here’s a look at it from the website.
Now who’s ready to play with some metallic gold paint?

I love that gold ceiling – very glam! I have plastic hangers and want to replace them all with new wooden hangers once our remodel is complete, such a nice look for this space!
Just a word to the wise for anyone reading this – be sure to check on building/electrical code in your area – we aren’t allowed to have anything but LED lighting in closets since xenon or incandescent can present a fire hazard (and we were installing it on a cathedral ceiling with ample distance from any clothing). We purchased a beautiful incandescent pendant for our closet but had to use it in our den instead.
