Stylish Ceiling Fans Under $400

And actually most of these ceiling fans are under $350!

It’s been a while since I’ve looked into buying a ceiling fan, and my, was I a little shocked at how much ceiling fans are selling for these days.   That sentence makes me sound old, doesn’t it?  😉  But seriously.  It’s as if anyone who makes a stylish ceiling fan knows what a special commodity they have on their hands, so they’ve decided to price it like it’s a rare piece of art.

I was reading a design magazine not too long ago, I think maybe it was Elle Decor but it might have been House Beautiful.  I’ve forgotten which and can’t seem to locate the article in question.  Anyhow, the theme of the article was “things designers wish their clients would stop requesting” or something along those lines.  And one designer from the midwest mentioned that she wished she didn’t always have to talk her clients out of installing ceiling fans.  She went on to say something to the affect of…….if you have air conditioning, what’s the point of having a ceiling fan?

I had to chuckle as I was reading because the only thing I could think was ~ clearly she has no idea what it’s like to live in the South during July and August.  We need our ceiling fans down here.  I mean, has this woman never seen A Time to Kill…..remember how sweaty Ashley Judd and Matthew McConaughey were in that movie?  That was not due to makeup artistry…..that was the good ol’ South bringing that glisten.   😉

For house #7 I’ve decided to have all the bedrooms wired for ceiling fans, but I only plan on having one installed for now.  However, I do plan to have a ceiling fan installed in the living room, the game room, the screen porch and even in our garage.  Although I don’t want the ceiling fans to eat up my entire lighting budget……so considering how price-y they’ve become, I’ve spent a great deal of time researching ceiling fans as of late.

I tend to prefer a black fan because black plays well with both brass and chrome light fixtures.  I know there are some designers that believe a ceiling fan should blend into the ceiling often recommending that you select a white fan so that it will “disappear against a white ceiling”.  But white just doesn’t fit well with my personal design style.   And since we’ve had black windows and doors installed in our new house, I think going black is going to be the right move for us.

I like a ceiling fan that either doesn’t have a light kit (which isn’t always the most functional for a space) or one that has a very streamlined light kit.   And one thing I’m just now noticing is that I also gravitate towards ceiling fans with just three fan blades.   This was not intentional, but clearly that’s something I prefer.  Of the seven listed above, do you have a favorite?   You will not believe the crazy good price of number 3!

While white isn’t a color that works for my own design aesthetic, I do think the white version of this fan is pretty incredible!

What is your ceiling fan style?  Have you ever thought about it?  Do you prefer something a bit more traditional, or do you like a more modern, streamlined ceiling fan?

Or are you in that camp that thinks ceiling fans should be burned at the stake?   Everyone’s welcome to their own opinion, I guess.  😉

  • I agree. I think the idea of that a white ceiling fan will somehow be less obvious is ridiculous. They’re too big to go unnoticed so therefore get one that is as attractive as possible in the style of your room. I agree about light kits. Unless they’re dim able most have hideous lighting effects. The bigger consideration is the length of the pole that supports the fan. For it to be effective that can make a big difference.

  • I live in the Midwest and have central air but could not live without my ceiling fan! I’m on medication to prevent a recurrence of breast cancer and one of the side effects is not flashes so a ceiling fan is a must for me and a comfortable sleep.

  • Number 4 is my favorite in white or black! The black is very striking, though. I have no doubt that whichever you choose, it will look fabulous!

  • We go for a somewhat cottage/traditional/eclectic look. I don’t know what else to call our style LOL. I like our fans to be a tad decorative, although the one in our great room is the only one I would call ornate. It is large, has a long rod (cathedral ceiling in the room) and lots of brass with wood blades. Actually our other fans have wood blades too. One in the great room, sunroom and master bedroom. Although we are definitely in the hot/humid south, the bedroom fan is the only one that gets used – almost 365 nights a year. The others are usually only on if we are airing out the house. Our garage is large – a work area plus vehicles, and it is heated/cooled. We did not do that at first, but quickly learned no way could someone use the shop unless you had ac. So, separate system out there. Thank goodness since a few years ago the Mr. transitioned to working from home! I think the black fans will look great with your doors and windows.

  • Five is my favorite but I’m also drawn to number two. Moving from the desert heat of Az to the heat and humidity of the South, I think no ceiling fan is just crazy talk.

  • I live in CT and we had a ceiling fan in our master that died. We couldn’t live without it and replaced it immediately!!! CT summers are hot too. Ours is very traditional ORB with three lights because that is what works in our house.

  • Having lived in the desert and the South all of my life and having lived with and without ceiling fans, I must say that ceiling fans are a must for us. My kids, even in the dead of winter, will sleep with their ceiling fans spinning at night. The air movement keeps us comfortable, year-round. A couple years ago, I shopped ceiling fans to replace an old, tired bedroom fan. I, too, was shocked by the sticker price. But the choices seemed endless. The one struggle I constantly experience with ceiking fans is the light kit brightness. We need the light of the centralized ceiling fan to illuminate the whole room, but with that, the design almost always showers the room with an overabundance of shiny, squintingly brilliant light. It hurts the eyes. Luckily, in our current home, the designer planned for this and ran two switches at the wall. One switch turns the fan blades on and off. The other switch turns the light kit on and off….so helpful for our short, growing kiddos and this semi-short momma.

  • I live in Missouri and yes, we have air conditioning, but we couldn’t live without ceiling fans! I couldn’t sleep without air movement at night! But we can also set thermostat higher so air isn’t running all the time because of fan moving air around. We use them all the time, and especially during the seasons we don’t need heat or air. I know designers don’t love them and of course, I would rather have a chandelier than a fan, but it’s just not practical!

  • I love 2 & 5. I WISH I could have a ceiling fan in my living room, because I like air movement! I bought a very slim, quiet, floor fan that is unobtrusive, just because I want air moving in the summer months. We have ceiling fans in the bedrooms and I love them. Can’t wait to see all your design ideas!

  • I live in Florida and when we built our house we installed 9 ceiling fans. Every now & again our A/C has gone out for one reason or another and we would have died without them. Also, they are a lifesaver when you’re menopausal. It’s the only thing that has helped me through hot flashes.

  • The #1 simple 3-blade black fan is my choice, but
Carmel, you can have the ceiling fans from my house. LOL! I’m in my sixties, and after climbing a ladder multiple times a year to clean fan blades, I decided to stop using them. Guess what? My house is far less dusty, and my dust allergies are much better. I do have a small tabletop tower fan in the MBR and a floor model for the LR. I’m now shopping for a large LR pendant light with similar smaller pendants for the kitchen peninsula. I have an antique simple glass chandelier coming out of storage for the MBR. The ceiling fans are COMING DOWN in central Alabama!

  • Hi Carmel! Sorry, but I don’t like the 3 blade fans. They don’t seem to cool as well and they’re too modern looking for my taste. They remind me of an airplaines propellers. I know designers hate ceiling fans. I too, live in the South and we’d die without our ceiling fans! Ours are white, to blend in hahaha! ?. Good luck choosing! Decisions, decisions, tsk, tsk tsk…lol! Enjoy the rest of your week! Sorry I couldn’t be of more help! ??

  • Haha! No need to apologize Sheila! We’re all entitled to our own opinions…..that’s why there are so many different design styles to choose from. 🙂

  • Ha! I totally get it….they can be such a pain to clean. I use a swiffer duster. I have the one with the long attachment arm, and it works like a charm. No need to grab a ladder or anything, except for the outdoor fans. The dang pollen can only be removed with soap and water.

  • Oh my word, I don’t know how we would survive if our a/c broke and we didn’t have fans. Same thing has happened to us! Gotta have some ceiling fans!

  • There is more to a ceiling fan than just price and what it looks like. Type of motor ( ad/dc), blade pitch, blade size, lumens in the light. Doesn’t look like any of that has been considered here. My style is to get as much much of the function that I want, close to the style that I want. I like the look of number 5, but the lumens are far too low for my room, and they don’t even say what kind of motor they use.

  • Of course all those things should be considered if they’re important to you. Lumens are rarely something I worry about with a ceiling fan because overhead lighting in living spaces isn’t my cup of tea. I prefer lamp light or sconce lighting to overhead lighting in those types of spaces.
