Wallpapered Closet Desk Nook

Okay friends, so you might remember that I created this design plan for my closet last June. Yes, you read that right. The thing is it took a little while for the wallpaper to arrive, and by the time it did, I had already started a couple of other projects. And then I took on our home library for the fall One Room Challenge; and so, here we are 9 months later, and I’m finally starting to bring this plan to life! Over the weekend I wallpapered the desk nook, and I’m so in love!

And here’s how it started…..

For me, it’s like, wow, what a difference color and pattern can make in a space! I love the way the desk nook stands out now and feels like its own special moment. This is exactly what I was hoping for when I decided to wallpaper just the nook. Since my closet doubles as my home office, I wanted the desk area to feel separate. And bringing in this gorgeous patterned wallpaper really did the trick, creating a visual break from the rest of the closet space and making this desk area a real highlight against the blush pink (State Street Pink by Duron for Sherwin Williams – the same color that we have on the exterior of our home – see all of our house paint colors here).

So now that the wallpaper is done, I’m trying to decide what I want to do with the desktop. I’m considering using the leftover black hexagon tile from our bathroom’s shower floor, but I’m not 100% sold just yet. Because I also like the idea of matching the gold in the paper and painting the desktop in a high gloss finish.

Painting the desktop gold would make the desk sort of disappear thereby bringing the focus to the wallpaper. But the black hexagon tile would be a nice contrast, adding an interesting pattern play. So…….

What are your thoughts? Tile it or paint it gold?

  • Paint, for sure. 1) the gold would catch the light, gorgeous, and 2) the tiles would be cold to the touch, and bumpy for writing.

  • Exactly my comment too – I actually write on my desk so tile would never work. Unless it’s one large tile – it’s the grout that’s the problem, not the tile 😉 I like the idea of paint.

  • I think the tile would be bumpy and look busy. my suggestion would be to have glass cut to fit the desktop and use flat clear acrylic bumpers on the underside. it would be smooth and easy to keep clean. then you could paint or use wood finish or use any type of paper under the glass. PS the pale gray type used when typing in the comments is extremely hard to see and to proofread — suggest changing to a darker gray…

  • I would paint gold all the way!  To the eyes, a high-gloss gold surface top will mimic the texture of fabric, which is perfect for a closet space.  Being sensitive to cold-to-touch surfaces, I tend to seek out smooth, wooden surface tops for quick note-taking and writing vs the cold kitchen and sink surround surfaces. Beautiful wallpaper and closet, carmel!

  • Thanks! I’m less concerned about the surface being smooth because I always write on a stack of papers, but I hadn’t thought about the tile being cold to the touch……and I’m not sure I would like that.

  • Hmmmm…..glass would be tricky to have cut, but it’s definitely an idea. Thanks for this feedback on the comment type- I don’t reply to comments in that section, so I had no idea the type was such a light shade of grey.

  • love the idea of glass (or plexiglass) on top of the desk surface. Underneath I would continue the wallpaper. The desk would definiteley disappear.
