Black Tile Shower, Teak Bench + Shower Dispensers

Over on the gram, I shared in stories that after years of searching for a teak bench for our black tile shower, I decided to try bringing in the bench we had out on our screen porch. And to my delight, it was a perfect fit! Turns out, what I was hunting for was right under my nose the whole time! And I feel like there’s a metaphor in there somewhere.

Also, I realized after posting those stories that I never shared an update about our shower here on the blog. You might remember we had to have our original black shower redone because of an issue with the wall tile. But I loved the all-black look so much that I just selected a different black tile for the walls and went with the same black hexagon for the floor. And I’m still so happy with this black-on-black choice for our bathroom. I know it’s not for everyone, but I really love it! I remember when we were building a lot of people felt that it was a trendy design choice that I’d regret when I mentioned wanting an all-black shower. But to me, black will always be a classic look. I also feel like sometimes we knock ourselves out of choosing things we really want solely because it’s seen as “trendy”. We want to choose the classic thing, or we don’t want to do what everyone else is doing. But I think if you really love something, no matter if it’s on trend or not, you’ll love it for years to come! Going with your design gut will always be my advice. That’s how you make your home your happy place!

Many have asked if it is difficult to keep the black tile clean, and I’ve personally found it easier than white. It’s very low maintenance, in my opinion. And I really feel like black grout in wet areas especially is super forgiving.

I shared a quick video tour here where you can see the shower niche and our black shampoo, conditioner, and soap dispensers. I bought them when we moved in three years ago, and they still look great! It’s such a small thing, but it really does make a difference, especially in a shower with a glass door.

Now that I’ve moved my teak bench into the shower, I need to figure out a replacement for the screen porch. More on that soon!

  • sorry for the caps; your page won’t let me type small letters. Could you explain the attraction of a black (or any dark) shower? It seems terrible to me. Show every water drop and soap scum, too dark too see yourself for grooming. I really would like to understand if there’s something I’m missing that people like.

  • It might surprise you, but I’ve found this black tile to be the most low-maintenance tile I’ve ever had in a shower. Maybe it’s because it has more of a satin, almost matte finish rather than a super glossy finish, but we don’t have any issues with water spots or soap scum at all. And having black grout in the shower is the best decision I’ve made! It’s so much easier to keep looking clean than white. Also, a dark shower doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll be too dark to see. There are two can lights that also function as filters above our shower and our bathroom also has two large windows, so we have plenty of light.
