How to: Make a Dorm Room Headboard

Not only was this headboard I made for my girl’s freshman dorm room easy to make, but after an entire school year of use, it still looks great! If you have a college-bound kiddo, add this simple, affordable project to your dorm room checklist. An upholstered headboard adds so much charm to a bedroom and brings major visual impact to a college home away from home!

Bonus, the only tool you will need to knock this quick project out is a staple gun!

DIY Details:

Supplies

  • Plywood
  • Upholstery Foam
  • Batting
  • Fabric
  • Scissors
  • Staple Gun

Directions

Start by having a 4×4 plywood board cut down to 33×40 inches at the hardware store.

Using a staple gun, cover with upholstery foam.

Then cover over the upholstery foam with a double layer of batting.

Last, cover with fabric. It’s seriously that easy!

*Quick Tips:

1. If this is your first upholstery project, maybe don’t use a stripe. It can be a little tricky to get stripes to stay level, so maybe opt for a solid or a busier pattern.

2. To make this project more affordable consider using a shower curtain or tablecloth as your fabric.

  • Hi! Thanks! Great question! I made this headboard a little taller than those that you find online you can buy so that it could fit between the wall/bed posts and mattress and fit snuggly, so there is no hardware or anything needed to keep it secure and in place. Worked like a charm all year!
