Mirror Mirror On The Clock

Thanks for your kind words about my man’s new and improved cave/ office.  He is really loving his new set-up!  I wanted to give you a little behind the scenes info on how I “created” the sunburst mirror.  I use the word “created” rather loosely here because the truth is it was super easy, and there really wasn’t much creating involved.  Honestly, all I really did was think outside the box or outside the clock if you will.

I found this baby at one of my usual suspects here in the L-E-X, Another Man’s Treasure.  It was hanging on the wall looking a little sad all covered in dust.  A thick, disgusting don’t-let-your-kids-touch-it layer of dust!  In the store it actually looked kind of grey.  Well, the mid-century modern look of it really caught my eye.  I was drawn to it like a moth to a flame 🙂  I rubbed my finger on it to see what it was made of and removed a layer of dust to see the gold underneath.  My heart skipped a beat.  Then I looked over at the price tag; it was marked $18!  My heart was racing.  I could see that this clock was clearly not functional (it would require rewiring), so I asked if they’d work with me on the price.  No dice.  No big.  I didn’t care one bit that this clock didn’t work because I had no intentions of using it as a clock anyway, but it never hurts to ask if the price is firm!  This $18 baby was mine!  I knew from the moment I laid my eyes on it that it was going to be repurposed into a mirror!  I think that’s really the key to this story- being able to see the potential in something.

Anyhow, once I de-funked the clock with the power of Windex, I got to work on de-facing her.  Things got a little craaaaaazaaay!  I used some pliers to take off the face of the clock.  I had to tug and pull pretty hard and in the process actually broke a few of the spokes/bursts!  Ooops!

A little super glue to the rescue!  Then I opened up this little box of mirrors that I purchased from Target a while ago for another project.  I think it was $19.99.

I tried out a couple different sizes and decided I liked the smaller one best.

Then I just super glued that reflective beauty right on to the face of what was a clock.  Added a heavy box on top to hold it in place until it dried and voila, a mid-century modern sunburst mirror!

I love love love it!

This old clock turned mirror did kind of get me thinking, especially after I read this post last week from Little Green Notebook about being overexposed to design.  It’s a great read – you really need to read it if you haven’t yet!  There may be a kagillion (yes, that IS a number – a big one) sunburst mirrors out there, but that doesn’t change the fact that I love this mirror!  Is there ever anything “new” in design, or is there something that hasn’t been done yet?  Chevron stripes – my parents had a brown and black chevron sofa when I was a kid (late 70’s and 80’s).  I would die to have that sofa now!  I wish I could find pictures of it to show you.  Basically, I guess what I’m saying is, yes this is just another sunburst mirror; nothing new here really.  However, love is love.  If you love something, ikat, chevron, sunburst mirror, does it really matter if it’s everywhere.  What matters is that it’s where you love to live and live to love.

The sun was shining today, and I was able to get some better pictures of this room!  What a difference a little sunlight makes!

  • It looks great! I love starburst things too. For a while I was trying to avoid 'popular' things that I saw everywhere, even if I loved them. Then I though… this is OUR house. If I like it, so what?! 🙂

  • I love the mirror and honestly, who cares if something is "overexposed"? I spent 10 yrs in marketing and overexposed was our way of saying that we were losing market share to a competitor. Love what you love…..design is about appreciation and if you like it, appreciate it and love it, then I say "poo" on everyone else!

  • I love this room. I found you today via another blog and I'm SO glad I stopped by to visit! I just spent way more time than I probably should have, reading your old blog posts. 🙂 I'm your newest follower and looking forward to more!

  • Beautiful piece to add to a room I am NOT going to show my hubby for fear of him wanting to change HIS room once again! Your hubby's man cave is spectacular!

We had this clock hanging in our house growing up and yes! it was electric. Funny I was just thinking about electric clocks the other day. Thank goodness we don't have to worry with THOSE WIRES!
