A Reader’s Living Room Inspiration Board

I recently received an e-mail from a reader asking for my help with her home.  She has purchased most of the major pieces of furniture, but she wanted my help in trying to pull it all together.  I was flattered that she even requested my help as I’m not a designer, just a design enthusiast!  Needless to say, I was more than happy to put together a little plan for her living room.

Her living room is quite large and is open to her dining room.  She painted the walls a light grey with an accent wall in mauve.  The sectional, while hard to really tell from this photo, is a grey color that has a greenish undertone.  Here’s a picture of where we’re starting in this room.

This reader’s e-mail said she wanted a warm and inviting feel with a splash of color.  She described her style as eclectic.  She has already ordered some long sheer panels in a neutral color for the windows.  Using the bird pillow she already had as inspiration here is the plan I put together for this space.

Living Room Inspiration Board

I first recommended that she paint the accent wall the same color as the rest of the room as that would really give the room a more cohesive look.

Then starting at the top of the board this is my plan.

1.  Bring in 2 lamps on the table behind the sofa.  These are Antique Mercury Glass Table Lamps from Pottery Barn.  They are kind of pricey, so as an alternate she could probably check HomeGoods, Marshalls, or TJMaxx for some silver metallic lamps.  I like the burlap shades for the texture and warmth they would add to this space.

2. In between the lamps I would use some green glass bottles, empty Pellegrino bottles would work just fine, to add some color.  I would group an odd number of them, either 3 or 5.  They would be a great way to add some fresh flowers to the room.

3.  On the sofa I suggested that she add a cream colored throw blanket and lots of pillows for that splash of color she was after.  All of these pillows are from Etsy sellers.  You can find them here, here, here, and here.

4. For the wall over the television I suggested that she bring in about 7 of these decorative bowls from West Elm.

I think they would look great displayed at random around the t.v., and the round shape would play nicely with the arch in the wall as well as with her round coffee table.  They would bring in a lot of warmth and texture.  To lessen the price of this display she could instead use some chargers such as these and get a similar look.

5. I suggested she bring in this white garden stool next to the arm chair she already has in the room.  I would add a bundle of books with a pop of color on top in the form of this faux coral from ZGallerie.
6. For the wall above the armchair I like the look of this four panel art piece of the tree branches.  This is from an Etsy artist, but I think this would be a really easy diy project.  She could purchase 4 long canvases at a craft store and paint them; and she could even use vinyl tree branches if she wasn’t comfortable free handing them.
7.  On the opposite wall above the sectional (next to the arch) I would bring in this over sized wall clock.
8.  To brighten up the coffee table I like this faux orchid from Pier 1 (real would be better, but I can’t keep mine alive so I’m going with faux) with this footed natural bowl from Ikea and some green apples.  I suggested she place the plant she already has on top of the books rather than next to the books and move the elephant to a different room.
9. For an end table that will also add some storage for extra throw blankets I would bring in this banana leaf trunk  and add a round tray like this one from ZGallerie.
10.  To add some color to the TV stand and make it look a little less utilitarian I like the idea of bringing in a few accessories that wouldn’t be too distracting.  I think a tall skinny glass apothecary jar filled with shells on one side and this group of luminaries on the other side would be perfect.
11.  Lastly, but I think this is a major room changer, I recommended that she bring in a larger 9×12 rug.  This sisal rug would really add lots of texture and would flow much better with the rug in the adjoining dining room.  I would place the rug almost completely under the sofa and move the coffee table in closer to the couch.

I had so much fun putting this board together!  I really tried to find affordable options and give as many alternatives as I could.  I’m so glad my reader liked the plan!  I’m looking forward to seeing the progression of her space as she starts to put this plan into action.

If you’re in need of a plan to help you get started decorating your home give me a shout; I’d love to help you!  It gives me a chance to obsess over someone else’s house rather than picking mine apart 😉
